1) Veterans Affairs Program to Provide Veterans Free Flu Shots and Health Care Information

Members of the Rural Health program team from the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury will provide free flu shots and VA services at the American Legion Post 130, 135 Bear Trail in Boone on Oct. 17, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Free flu shots will be available for all veterans currently using VA health care and to those veterans possessing a DD-214 and a valid photo ID. The team will provide former and current military members assistance on registration and health care education. Former military members who are not currently enrolled for VA health care benefits will need to bring a copy of their DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, to attach to their application for VA health care benefits. If you have lost your DD Form 214, you can request a copy. VA personnel will assist in completing enrollment applications, requesting DD Form 214s and initiating online services. 2) Grandfather Mountain October Programs

  • Fall Colors: On Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m., hike up to Flat Rock View and meet a park ranger to discuss what makes the leaves “turn” brilliant orange, purple, yellow, red and all colors in between. 
  • Camouflage: On Monday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m., attendees will learn how animals use camouflage in the wild. After the presentation, attendees will get to try to find several animals in the area around where the program is held 

3) Stone Soup

On Thursday, Oct. 24, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Sandy Rees, professional fundraising coach and consultant, will present a half-day conference “From Awkward to Awesome: How to Build Relationships that Lead to Outrageously Loyal and Generous Donors, Year After Year.” The conference will take place on the campus of Appalachian State University in the Parkway Ballroom of the Plemmons Student Union. This part-lecture, part workshop program will help nonprofit staff, board members and directors learn what it takes to engage donors, build relationships, acquire repeat gifts and walk away with a donor retention plan they can use. Registration for this event is $40 for one person, $25 for each additional registrant coming from the same organization. Cost includes breakfast, lunch and all day coffee courtesy of Stick Boy Kitchen and a free follow up webinar. For an additional $30, Sandy will be offering an afternoon workshop limited to 12 people for more in-depth coaching and a plan tailored to your organization’s specific needs. 

4) Healthy Harvest Cooking Class

On Sunday, Oct. 13, from 4-6 p.m. Chetola Resort will host a Healthy Harvest Cooking Class in the Evergreen room, facilitated by Catherine Cantlin and Caroline Stahlschmidt. Registration is $50 through Oct. 10 and $65 beginning Oct. 11. Price includes interactive cooking demonstration, significant recipe tastings, printed take-home recipes, voucher for one yoga/fitness class, 10% off coupon for spa products at The Spa at Chetola Resort. Class size is limited. Non-refundable payment required to confirm registration. The menu will include a pumpkin chai smoothie, coconut yogurt, ginger apple granola, carrot parsnip soup, asian purple slaw, spaghetti squash with butternut sauce, creamy kale, miso roasted Brussel sprouts and pumpkin macaroons.

5) Operation Medicine Cabinet

Saturday, Oct. 19 is Operation Medicine Cabinet Drug Take-Back Day. All day, drugs and medicines will be collected, no questions asked. Volunteers from the Seven Devils Pulic Safety Committee will collect all prescription and over the counter medications. The event will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Foscoe Fire Department and the Food Lions in Boone, Blowing Rock and Deep Gap. For more information, call 828-265-4852 or 828-264-5305.
