Email Announcements We Are Receiving Today: See What’s Going On Around The Community

1) CAC Meeting

Our next Community Appearance Commission meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. in the Planning and inspections Department conference room on the post office level. 

2) Storytelling

There is a storytelling every Tuesday evening at Todd General Store on Railroad Grade Road in Todd. Stories begin at 6 p.m. The storyteller for tomorrow, Aug 20, is Doyle Pace. 

3) Blue Ridge Parkway Special Ranger Program

There will be a special ranger program on Friday, Aug. 30 at the Linville Falls Campground Amphitheater at Milepost 316. 

  • 7 p.m. – The Civil War in the Mountains with Award Winning Historian and Author: In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Civil war author and 2010 North Carolina Historian of the Year Michael Hardy and a group of historic re-enactors will give a presentation on the Civil War in the Appalachian Mountains
  • Saturday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m.- Get Lost in the Woods: There are a myriad of activities that can take you into the woods but what happens when you get lost? Join a ranger and discuss the best way to get lost in the woods, so you get found.

4) Laughter Yoga

The Lois E. Harrill Senior Center is excited to be offering a new class, Laughter Yoga. Laughter Yoga will run for five weeks and will be held Friday, Sept. 6, Sept. 20, Sept. 27, Oct. 4 and 11 from 3-4:30 p.m. Individuals are welcome to come for all classes or can just come for one. The class will be taught by Sheila Felman. Laughter yoga is a practice involving prolonged voluntary laughter. It enables a person to laugh for a few minutes and allows for short breaks of yogic breathing, with the goal to help alleviate stress and allow for periods of relaxation. This program is designed for individuals with all levels of ability. The class is free and open to anyone in the community, but priority is given to those sixty and older. Please call 265-8090 with any questions.

5) NAMI Meeting

NAMI High Country (National Alliance on Mental Illness) welcomes all; those living with mental illness, family members, professionals, students, and anyone with an interest. Our next meeting will be Monday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Senior Center/Project on Aging. After that we will meet the first Monday of every month in the Public Library Conference Room. 

6) Jack Hicks Garage Benefit Gospel Singing

On Friday, Aug. 23, The Primitive Quartet, Archie Watkins and Smokey Mountain Reunion, Matt Dibbler and the Resurrection Trio, KC and the Elk Valley Boys will play. Free admission. Food available by donation. All donations will be given to the Tri-State Baptist Children’s Home. Doors open at 6 p.m. Singing starts at 7 p.m. Plenty of parking is available. Jack Hicks Garage is located in Elk Park on N.C. 19E near the intersection of N.C. 19E and N.C. 194. Bring your lawn chair and spend the evening listening to some great gospel groups.
