1) Grandfather Home for Children Down Home Dinner

If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend check out what Grandfather Home for Children has going on. Tomorrow, from 2-6 p.m. they will hold a Down Home Dinner and Festival at Hayes Campus in Banner Elk. There will be free admission, music, a variety show, craft demonstrations, free barbecue dinner (advanced registration required for dinner) and an alumni homecoming luncheon on July 28. 

2) Meeting of the Virginia/North Carolina High Speed Rail Compact

Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. in the board room of the NCDOT Transportation Building. The purpose of this meeting is to plan and coordinate development and implementation of the Southeast High Speed Rail corridor from Charlotte to Washington, D.C. The Virgina-North Carolina High Speed Rail Compact was authorized by the Congress and established through legislation enacted by the Virginia and North Carolina General Assemblies. As set forth in legislation, the compact will meet at least twice a year. 

3) Archaeologist Dr. Whyte at New River State Park

We are pleased to announce that ASU Archaeologist Dr. Whyte will be presenting an evening program about our local Appalachian Pre-history on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. This program will be presented at 221 Access of New River State Park.

4) Caldwell Arts Council Presents August Exhibit “Science as Art”

The Caldwell Arts Council is pleased to announce the exhibit “Science as Art,” featuring wind-generated art by Mark Nystrom of Appalachian State University in Boone, printmaking and digital art by Rebekah Tolley of Davidson and figurative sculpture by Susannah Zucker of Fairview. An artist reception is scheduled for Friday, Aug 2, from 5-7 p.m. The public is invited free of charge. The exhibit will continue through Aug. 23. The Caldwell Arts Council is located at 601 College Avenue in downtown Lenoir and is open Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, please call 828-754-2486.

5) Registration for Yoga Classes at Senior Centers

The next 12-week session of yoga classes is scheduled to meet from 6:15-7:15 p.m. at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center on Tuesdays beginning Sept. 10. Deadline to register is 5 p.m. on the first day of class. Classes will also be held at the Western Watauga Community Center on Thursdays starting Sept. 5 from 10:15-11:15 a.m. This class is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced yoga students. The instructor, Akal Dev Sharonne, has been a yoga practitioner and teacher for more than 30 years. Her classes are a delightful blend of humor, challenge and wisdom. The cost of each 12-week session is $60 per person. Any age may register, but if the class exceeds the limit, priority will be given to persons aged 60 and older. 6) Tai Chi Classes at the Senior Center

Two 12-week sessions of Tai Chi (beginner and intermediate) will begin on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center, instructed by Tim Winecoff. The intermediate class will be held on Thursday afternoons from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a 5:30-6:30 p.m. class for beginner students. The deadline for registration is 4:30 p.m. on the first day of class. Any age may join but priority will be given to persons aged 60 and older. The cost is $48 per person for either 12-week series. The Senior Center is located in the Human Services Building at 132 Poplar Grove Connector in Boone. Call the center at 265-8090 with any questions. 

7) Needlework Class at Harrill Senior Center in Boone

We are now accepting registration for a new session of needlework class. Classes will meet at the Harrill Senior Center each Thursday from 1-4 p.m. beginning Thursday, Aug. 8. The instructor is Marianne Evans and the charge for the 12-week session is $36. Instruction will be available in knitting, needlepoint, embroidery, cross-stitch and hardanger. Class size is limited. Any age may attend but priority is given to persons age 60 and older. The deadline for registration is 12:30 on the first day of class. Please call the Senior Center at 265-8090 for more information.
