1) Welcome, New Avery County Chamber Member

The Avery County Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome and thank one of our newest chamber members! Tri-Seasons Medical Care (A concierge medical service for seasonal residents). 2) Inaugural Stop! Drop! and Roll! 5K

The Watauga County Firefighters Association is hosting its Inaugural Stop! Drop! & Roll! 5k on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 8 a.m. The goals of the fundraiser are: (1) to help raise money for a scholarship to support a graduating high school student planning to pursue a career in emergency services and (2) to support families of burned victims. The race starts and ends at Fire Department Station 2 (intersection of State Farm Road and Hunting Lane), routing participants along areas of the Boone Greenway Trail. Early registration (before July 3) is $15. Day of race registration is $20 for everyone. Make checks payable to Watauga County Firefighters Association (WCFA). T-shirts are available on a first come, first served basis; refreshments will be provided after the race, and all registered participants are eligible for a door prize.  Must be present to win! 3) Hagan to Question Top Military Leaders on Sexual Assault During Armed Services Committee Hearing

Tomorrow, U.S. Senator Kay Hagan (NC) will question top military leaders of each service branch on what is being done to address the military sexual assault crisis. Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey will be appearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, as well as the service chiefs and lawyers from each branch of the military. For several years, Hagan has called attention to the problem of military sexual assault. After an alarming Pentagon report put the estimated number of sexual assaults in 2012 at 26,000, Hagan wrote Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to request that he report to Congress on the progress his department is making to implement new sexual assault prevention laws passed in the 2013 Defense Authorization Act. 5) Beech Mountain’s First Annual Wellness Weekend

Join us at Buckeye Recreation Center for two days of wellness events and activities. Informative speakers including Banner Elk Chiropractor Dr. Joseph Nitti

Wellness Expert Caroline Stahlschmidt CHHC and Marla Gentile Licensed Professional Counselor.  On Saturday, a Wellness Fair will take place with a variety of booths that will give participants the opportunity to learn about health and wellness issues and there will be various healthy products to purchase.  The day will also include fitness classes. Healthy snacks will be served.

6) NASW Boone LPU Meetings

The National Association of Social Workers Local Program Unit in Boone, NC, invites you to our summer programs.  On June 21, networking and lunch begin at 12:30 pm.  Program which offers one continuing education hour is 1:00-2:00 pm. the meeting is at the Watuaga County Public Library on Queen Street in Boone, NC. 7) Town of Beech Mountain Kid’s Fishing Derby

Kids grab your fishing poles and bait and head on down to Lake Coffey for Beech Mountain’s Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby. Come spend the day on the lake as you catch all the fish you can! Prizes will be awarded for numerous categories throughout the Derby. This is a wonderful way to spend time with your family and to get outdoors! The fish will be biting, are the little fishermen and fisherwomen up for the challenge!

8) Elkland Arts Center Liberty Parade

Elkland Arts Center, a vibrant community arts nonprofit located in Todd, is gearing up for the Liberty Parade!  Held every year on July 4th, this fun, family-friendly event is free and accessible to everyone.  

This year, EAC is celebrating the element of FIRE, and we hope you will join us and fan the flame of your creative spirit! There are costumes and props for all paraders to wear and carry, poetry and dance space, music and sound-making instruments, and much more – all to help you fan your flame!

We have several opportunities for you to get involved throughout the month of June.  Elkland Art Center is hosting adult artist workdays every Friday from 1-4pm.  Every Saturday from 1-3pm, ALL ages and skill levels are welcome to come and create something for the parade.  We are currently seeking volunteers for the Liberty Parade, and we will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of this parade.
