1) Overmountain Men and the Battle of Kings Mountain

On Saturday, July 12 at Linville Falls Campground Amphitheater Milepost 316, the Blue Ridge Parkway will host the evening program Overmountain Men and the Battle of Kings Mountain at 7 p.m. In the fall of 1780, the prospects for victory in the Revolutionary War looked pretty bleak for the Patriots. Hope for independence was fading fast until the citizens of the Overmountain country banded together and marched over the mountains to face the threat posed by the British. Join the ranger and special guest speaker from the Overmountain Victory Trail Association Ronnie Lail to learn more about these true American heroes.

2) iPad Held at Watauga County Public Library July 11

Need help with your iPad? Charles Safrit will be hosting a two part class at the Watauga County Public Library designed to help new users become familiar with their device. Part I will be on July 11 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Topics covered include: connecting to WiFi, an overview of apps and downloading e-books using Overdrive & Kindle Reader. Space is limited. 3) Coffee Talk and Book Signing at Art Cellar July 5

Start your Saturday morning with art and coffee. Joseph Cave, painter, will participate in a coffee talk and book signing on Saturday, July 5, from 10 a.m.-noon. Highly collected and admired painter Joseph Cave will be celebrating the Fourth of July weekend at the Art Cellar Gallery. His work is featured along with painter Richard Oversmith in the gallery’s newest exhibition, “Two Views” which opens July 2 and runs through July 26. On Saturday, Joseph Cave will be at the gallery for the coffee talk. THis casual event includes a short talk by the artist and an opportunity to ask questions, purchase his beautiful new book and learn more about inspiration and technique while enjoying morning refreshments.

4) Carson D. Rich Sworn in As Newest Member of ASU Board of Trustees

Carson D. Rich of Weddington was sworn in on Friday, June 27, as the newest member of Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees. Rich is president of Appalachian’s Student Government Association and a junior communication/advertising major. Diane C. Deal, Watauga County Clerk of Superior Court administered the oath. Rich said he ran for SGA president because he loves to give back to organizations. He was also president of his high school student body. “It is a humbling experience to be a part of something so much greater than myself,” he said of his involvement in ASU’s SGA and membership on its Board of Trustees. Typically, student body presidents serve on the university board of trustees only as ex officio members with non-voting privileges. Appalachian is one of the few institutions that allow the SGA representative voting rights. As the SGA president, Rich is eligible to serve one year on the board.
