1) Programs at the Blue Ridge Parkway

On Saturday, July 5 at 7:30 p.m., a Wilderness Skills evening program will be held at Linville Falls Campground Amphitheater located at milepost 316. While out hiking you encounter wildlife, deal with extreme heat or endure a thunderstorm. What do you do then? Come find out about these and other situations.

2) Summer Stock Seminar Held July 5

Join Roger Reynolds for a workshop of investing called “Trading for a Living” including how to find tops and bottoms, how and when to sell sort and more exciting information. The event will be held on Saturday, July 5 at noon at the Watauga County Public Library. ‘

3) July Programs at Elk Knob State Park

  • Trail Work Days: Every Saturday through the middle of November, staff and volunteers will meet at the Summit Trailhead at 9 a.m. and work until approximately 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. Tools are provided, but volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes and bring work gloves, lunch and water. Most of the time will be spent building the new one-mile loop trail, the Beech Tree Trail, although work may include some repair work on the Summit Trail. If you would like to be involved in a fulfilling project that will fill you with a well-deserved sense of pride, join in on Saturdays at Elk Knob State Park.
  • Wildflower Hike: See all of the beautiful flowers on a guided ranger hike at Elk Knob State Park on Sunday, July 5 at 2 p.m. Hiking attire to include boots is recommended. The hike is weather dependent. Please call the park office if the weather is questionable at 828-297-7261. Meet at the Elk Knob Summit Trailhead.
  • Animals of Elk Knob: A park ranger will be at the start of the Summit Trail sharing information about animals that live at Elk Knob. There will be skins to touch and taxidermied animals to view on Sunday, July 6 at 1 p.m. This is an informal program which will be canceled in the event of rain.
  • Salamanders: Join a park ranger on Saturday, July 12 at 2 p.m. to learn about salamanders and how they are great indicators of the state of the environment. Through a PowerPoint program you will learn about the native salamanders found at Elk Knob State Park. Afterwards we will see if we can find any out in the park. Meet at the Elk Knob State Park Office.
  • Tom Dooley Hike: Did Tom Dooley murder Laurie Foster in the shadow of the Blue Ridge? Join a ranger on Saturday, July 13 and 27 at 2 p.m. as he dispels myths and stereotypes associated with the legend. Participants will learn about the murder and music of Tom Dooley. Hiking attire to include boots is recommended. Program is weather dependent. Meet at the Summit Trailhead.
  • Tree ID Hike: Are you curious about the trees surrounding your woodland walk? Come learn their names and some interesting facts about these ancient sentinels of history. Meet Saturday, July 19 at 2 p.m. at the trailhead parking lot.
  • Snakes of North Carolina: Snakes are often one of the most feared and hated of our creatures, yet they are very beneficial and necessary to our environment. Join a park ranger and learn more about these wonderful reptiles. Meet on Saturday, July 20 at 2 p.m. at the Park Office.

4) Events at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center

  • Yoga Class: The next 8-week session of Yoga classes are scheduled to start on Tuesday, July 8, from 5:15-6:15 p.m. at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center. Deadline to register for the class is 5 p.m. on July 8. The total cost of the class is $42. Jenny Brooks will be teaching Hatha Flow Yoga. This class is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced yoga students. Any age may register, but if the class exceeds the attendance limit priority will be given to persons age 60 and older.   • Living Healthy Workshop: Are you over the age of 60 and dealing with chronic disease such as asthma, diabetes, COPD, heart disease, arthritis or fibromyalgia? If so, the Living Healthy program may be your answer for a better quality of life. The Living Healthy Program is a six-week education group designed to help people like you learn how to live a healthier life with a chronic condition. This free program will be held at the Harrill Senior Center on Tuesdays from July 8-Aug. 12 from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Please call 828-295-8090 to register. Limited space is available for people under the age of 60.
