1) Hospitality House Hosts Down Home Fish Fry June 30
Hospitality House is rolling out the welcome mat for its Wilkes County friends and supporters on Monday, June 30. Serving Wilkes County for nearly 20 years, Hospitality House is hosting a Down Home Fish Fry and Open House to thank the Wilkes County community for their ongoing support. They are inviting local Watauga residents to join them in welcoming their adjoining county neighbors to this free community event. In 2014, Hospitality House provided 2,134 nights of shelter, food and life-changing services to Wilkes County’s homeless population. Long-term success is made possible through the Transitional Housing, Family Housing and Supportive Housing programs that Hospitality House offers. The Down Home Fish Fry includes an all day open house with lunch from 11:30-1:30 p.m. and dinner from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The North Wilkesboro Mountain View Baptist Church youth group and the Watauga branch of the NAACP will be helping with the meals. Churches, individuals and civic groups are encouraged to come any time before lunch or dinner and take a tour. Hospitality House is located at 338 Brook Hollow Rd. in Boone just off of Bamboo Road.
2) Hands-On Canning Class Offered July 12
On Saturday, July 13 from 1-4 p.m., N.C. Cooperative Extension will offer a hands-on canning class. The class will learn how to safely can using a pressure canner and a boiling water bath. Class will be held at the Agricultural Conference Center located at 252 Poplar Grove Rd. Space is limited, so register by paying $10 in advance at the N.C. Cooperative Extension at 971 W King St. in Boone or by calling 828-264-3061.
3) Teen Cooking Class Held July 14-18
Learn practical skills you need to feed yourself and others and enjoy a delicious lunch each day! Recipes ready in 30 minutes or less, dorm survival, fish cookery, patty making, vegetarian ideas, interesting side dishes, knife skills, napkin folding and much more. Wow your friends and their palates! Open to 13-18 year olds on July 14-18 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Class size is limited, so register in advance by completing a form and paying $95 to Watauga County North Carolina Cooperative Extension at 971 West King St.
4) Free Concert at St. John’s July 6
St. John’s Episcopal Church features “Ensemble 322,” a quintet of faculty of ASU’s Hayes School of Music for Strings and Bow performing “Spanish Music for Strings” a romantic journey through Spain from the renaissance to contemporary. St. John’s is located on Herb Thomas Road off of Mast Gap Road in Valle Crucis (sign will be posted). Bring along a picnic to share and meet these fine musicians.
