1) Movie Screening at Watauga County Library June 19

The Watauga County Public Library’s Third Thursday group invites you to join them for a movie viewing of Johnny Got His Gun on June 19 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Johnny Got His Gun is a 1971 film based on the 1939 novel of the same name. It was written and directed by Dalton Trumbo, one of the “Hollywood Ten” that refused to testify before Senator McCarthy’s HUAC committee. The film tells the story of an American soldier who wakes up in a hospital having lost his limbs during WWI.

2) Free Summer Meals for Children Offered at Cove Creek School

Free breakfast and lunch will be available to children and youth ages 18 and under at Cove Creek School on Mondays through Thursdays from June 16 through July 22. This summer feeding program will provide a free breakfast between8-9 a.m. and a free lunch between 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for anyone 18 or under who comes to the school cafeteria accompanied by a parent or other adult. Children must be transported to the site by a parent or guardian and the parent or guardian must remain with the child while they eat. Unattended chldren cannot be dropped off at the site and will not be served. The meals must be consumed on site at the school, no take out orders will be available. Adults will not be able to purchase a meal but can bring one if they wish to eat with their children.

3) The Crossnore Fine Arts Gallery Presents: Alan Hollar

Alan Hollar has been turning wood on the lathe since 1986. He is self-taught, being introduced to the medium when he needed to make replacement parts as a furniture restorer. His family was involved in the furniture industry; the late was the only wood working application that his family did not use. Because of that there was no work to aspire and no intimidation. Alan works primarily with Appalachian hardwood. The show will be on display June 25 – July 16. The gallery invites the public to join in the gallery on July 25 from 4-6 p.m. to meet Alan and enjoy his beautiful pieces. The gallery is located at 205 Johnson Lane in Crossnore. 4) Elkland Art Center Announces Liberty Parade 2014

Elkland Art Center, a vibrant community arts nonprofit located in Todd, is gearing up for the Liberty Parade! Held every year on July 4, this fun, family-friendly event is free and accessible to everyone! This year, EAC is celebrating sound, and we hope you will join us as we create a joyful noise. Paraders can wear sound-suit costumes and carry music and instruments and musicians will weave through the parade. Sound will be incorporated into the design process and we hope you will join us as we create the fun props and costumes that will be used on parade day. Plus, we will have a free concert with Kendra Warren and The King Bees.
