1) Jayne Named Appalachian’s Chief Diversity Officer

Bindu Kolli Jayne has been named chief diversity officer and associate vice chancellor for equity, diversity and compliance at Appalachian State University. She has been the director of policy, compliance and equity and director of labor relations at the University of Delaware since 2012 and was chief policy advisor and legal counsel there from 2010-2011. Jayne will report to the Office of the Chancellor, as well as the Office of the Provost. She will begin her duties at Appalachian June 23. While at the University of Delaware, Jayne managed the office of Equity and Inclusion, was the university’s Title IX coordinator, conducted training and education for faculty, staff and stuents, oversaw the university’s enterprise risk management program and prepared the university’s annual Affirmative Action PLan and managed Title IX and affirmative action program audits. “Bindu Jayne has a breadth of expertise regarding affirmative action, civil rights and compliance issues that will benefit Appalachian, its students and employees and understands the complexities of this position,” said Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Lori S. Gonzalez. As Appalachian’s chief diversity officer, Jayne will be responsible for the university’s compliance with laws, regulations and guidelines related to affirmative action, equal opportunity and disability services. She also will draft related university policies and serve as the university’s contact with external state and federal civil rights agencies such as the N.C. Office of Administrative Hearings, U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs. Jayne has presented workshops on higher education discrimination law and institutional culture and compliance and sexual violence on campus, interned with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and worked for an international law firm in Philadelphia where she counseled higher education institutions on governance and employment-related issues. Jayne is a graduate of Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in government. She earned a juris doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

2) Free Puppy Clinic and Yappy Hour June 17

3) Caldwell Arts Council Calls for Artists

The Caldwell Arts Council invites area artists, crafters and collectors to clean out studios and homes of sketches, paintings, woodcrafts, framed and unframed original artwork, pottery, unwanted art supplies and more and participate in the yART Sale of Original Art held July 2-3 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on July 5. 4) Boone Country Dancers Hold Contra Dance June 14

The Boone Country Dancers will be at the Apple Barn in Valle Crucis for its next community contra dance on Saturday, June 14. Everyone is welcome to attend the contra dance regardless of dance experience. The evening will begin with a beginners’ workshop from 7:30-8 p.m. The goal of the workshop is to teach the fundamentals of contra dance with a focus on having fun. After the workshop, the regular dance will run from 8-11 p.m. with a waltz break at 9:30 p.m. The dance will feature the band Bare Knuckle Quartet and teh caller will be Dean Snipes. Dancers of all ages are encouraged to attend and no partner is necessary. Come as you are and wear clean, soft-soled flexible shoes for dancing. As always, our dances are smoke and alcohol free. Admission to the dance is $7 for adults, $5 for high school students and free to anyone 12 and younger.
