1) Appalachian Journal’s Double Issue Highlights Regional Filmmaking, Activism and Literature

Appalachian Journal has released a double issue that includes reflections on Appalachian filmmaking and discussions of literature and Appalachian women’s literacy. It also contains new poems by Robert Morgan, John Thomas York, Gilbert Allen, Mark DeFoe, Emily Hancock, R.M. Kinder, David Holt, Hilda Downer and Rita Quillen. Current events and reviews of recent books and media complete the issue. The journal is based at Appalachian State University and is edited by Professor Sandra L. Ballard.

2) Dinosaurs and the Blue Ridge Mountains offered June 7

The Blue Ridge Parkway will host an evening program on Saturday, June 7 at the Linville Falls Campground Amphitheater at Milepost 316. At 7 p.m. Dinosaurs and the Blue Ridge Mountains will begin. Can you find dinosaur fossils in the mountains around here? This is a frequently asked question by our park visitors. Learn the answer and more about dinosaurs, fossils, geology and paleontology of the mountains of western North Carolina at this ranger-led program. All programs are free and open to the public.

3) Summer Jewelry Classes Held June and July

Summer jewelry classes for parents, grandmothers or guardians and kids. Each couple can choose from a variety of fun projects including friendship bracelets, dangle earrings, beaded and pendant necklaces. All supplies and instruction are provided. The classes are held a the Western Watauga Community Center located at 1081 Old. U.S. 421 in Sugar Grove. The classes will be held Tuesdays in June and July from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost is $10 per class which covers two people with one project per person. Additional projects are available at an extra cost. No advance registration is necessary, and for more information call 828-297-5195.

4) HCAS Meeting Held June 17

The High Country Audubon Society (HCAS) will host its next meeting on Tuesday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express in Boone. Nicole DelCogliano will present a program on Frack Free NC. Nicole is an intern at Clean Water for North Carolina (CWFNC), a graduate student at ASU and an organic farmer in Yancey County. Clean Water for NC is a 30-year-old statewide nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote clean, safe water and environments for all North Carolina. CWFNC is also a partner with Frack Free NC. Nicole’s presentation will also include information regarding SB 786 that has just passed in the NC General Assembly. HCAS invites the public to attend the monthly meetings and field trips. 5) Pretty in Pink Fashion Show and Luncheon Held June 19

The Pretty in Pink Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held this year at Camp Yonahnoka on Thursday, June 19. The champagne reception will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the fashion show and luncheon to follow at noon. Fashions for the models this year will be provided by Belk of Boone. The featured speaker will be Amy Michael, cancer survivor. The event benefits the Avery County Cancer Resource Center at Cannon Memorial Hospital. The Center is available to cancer patients and their families in the community and surrounding areas. Patients are referred by their medical provider and have access by appointment to a variety of resources including a wig bank, an assortment of hats and caps, prosthetics, fittings and a variety of literature. The Avery County Cancer Resource Center is located in the Sloop Medical Office Plaza beside Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville. 6) CoCoRaHs Event

Nolan Doesken, founder of CoCoRaHS, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, will speak Thursday, June 5 at Appalachian State University. Doesken’s 6 p.m. presentation will be held in Room 114, Belk Library and Information Commons on Campus.
