1) Blue Ridge Parkway Announces Ranger Programs

  • Lost but Found: On Saturday, May 24, at 2 p.m. discover basic prevention and survival skills in case you get lost in the woods. The program will take place at Julian Price Campground Amphitheater at Milepost 297.
  • Dinosaurs: On Saturday, May 24, at 7 p.m. learn about dinosaur fossils in the mountains of western North Carolina. The program will take place at Linville Falls Campground Amphitheater at milepost 316.
  • Skunks: On Saturday, May 31 at 2 p.m., learn more about a beautiful but sometimes stinky animal of the forest. This program will take place at Julian Price Campground Amphitheater at milepost 297.
  • Fighting Wildland Fire: On Saturday, May 31 at 7 p.m., learn about the tools and training needed to be a wildland firefighter. This program will take place at Linville Falls Campground Amphitheater at milepost 316.

2) CoCoRaHS Founder Nolan Doesken to Speak June 5 at ASU

Nolan Doesken, founder of CoCoRaHS, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network will speak on Thursday, June 5 at Appalachian State University. Doesken’s 6 p.m. presentation will be held in room 114 at Belk Library and Information Commons on campus. Doesken is the state climatologist for Colorado at the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University. He will discuss the history of CoCoRaHS, present precipitation statistics from the Southern Appalachian region, share goals for the future and facilitate a discussion on these and related topics. Members of the CoCoRaHS network and others interested in the weather are invited to bring their stories and questions to the presentation. Door prizes will be awarded. Doesken will also be the banquet speaker for the 71st Eastern Snow Conference being held June 3-5 at Appalachian. The event is open to the public, but attendees must register online or on-site. Registration ranges from $100 for students and one-day participants to $200 to attend the entire conference. Registration fees include a buffet breakfast, lunches and refreshment breaks and the banquet for those registering for the June 4 event. Early registration deadline is May 23. On site registration will be $250.

3) Flapjack Fundraiser to Benefit Hospitality House Held May 24

The Apple Gold Group, a franchisee of Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar is proud to partner with the Hospitality House of Boone to host a flapjack fundraiser on Saturday, May 24. The Hospitality House serves as a community resource throughout seven counties in North Carolina. The group members will use the funds raised to help purchase supplies for upcoming outreach events. “The Apple Gold Group is honored to partner with the Hospitality House to assist in their fundraising efforts,” said Michael Olander, President and CEO of the Apple Gold Group. “We invite those in the area to join us in supporting the Boone community members on May 24.” The Hospitality House of Boone fundraiser will be hosted by the Applebee’s restaurant located at 2036 Blowing Rock Rd. in Boone starting at 7 a.m. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased by contacting Brittany Johnson at 828-264-1237. Breakfast includes a short stack on pancakes, sausage and beverages.

4) Memorial Day Ceremony Held at Appalachian

Appalachian State University will host a Memorial Day ceremony and reception on Monday, May 26 at 7:30 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial located adjacent to the Dougherty Administration Building. Because of construction in the administration building, the reception featuring breakfast foods will be held outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony and reception will be held in Plemmons Student Union’s Solarium.
