1) Community Appearance Commission Meeting May 22

A meeting of the Town of Boone Community Appearance Commission will be held on Thursday, May 22 at 6 p.m. in the Planning and Inspections Upstairs conference room located at 680 W. King St.

2) ASU Volleyball Announces 2014 Schedule

Appalachian State University volleyball head coach Matt Ginipro announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2014 season on Thursday. “We are excited about the 2014 schedule that we were able to put together,” said Ginipro. “The team is very hungry to get back in the gym in the fall and I think we have a very competitive schedule to get us ready for our first year in the Sun Belt.” Appalachian will play 16 matches in the Holmes Center this season, starting off its home slate by hosting the Appalachian Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29 and Saturday, Aug.30. The Mountaineers will face Cleveland State on Friday at 7 p.m. before playing Tennessee Tech at 12:30 p.m. and Tennessee at 7 p.m. on Saturday. From there the Mountaineers will hit the road for the first time by traveling to Boiling Springs for a 7 p.m. match against Gardner-Webb. App State continues its non-conference schedule with a trip to Louisville, Ky. on Friday, Sept. 5 to compete in the Louisville Tournament. The Mountaineers return home for a match against Presbyterian on Tuesday, Sept. 9 beginning at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers will host their second tournament with the Black and Gold CHallenge taking place on Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13. Appalachian will play Georgia State on Friday at 7 p.m. making it Appalachian’s first even Sun Belt event. On Saturday the Apps will finish off the tournament by facing Radford at 12:30 p.m. and Maryland at 7 p.m. Appalachian State will begin conference play for good on Friday, Sept. 19 as they travel to Statesboro, Ga. for a 6 p.m. match against former Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern. The Mountaineers will close out their regular season schedule on Saturday, Nov. 22 when they meet Georgia State in Atlanta at 6 p.m. Appalachian Volleyball’s first Sun Belt conference tournament will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 26-Sunday, Nov. 30 in San Marcos, Texas.

3) Appalachian State v. Furman Baseball Series Opener Postponed 

Thursday’s baseball series opener between Appalachian State and Furman has been postponed due to heavy rain in the High Country. The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Friday at Appalachian State’s Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium. The first game will start at 1 p.m. with the nightcap scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

4) Join a Summer Fun Bowling League

The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce invites all residents to join a summer fun bowling league this summer. The league is held as a Monday Night Mixed Summer with four bowlers per team. The games start at 6:50 p.m. for 14 weeks, with a cost of $11 per night. Be ready to bowl on Monday, May 19. For more information, call Boone Bowling Center at 828-262-3166.

5) Avery County Summer Events

Set your phone, mark your calendars or tie a string around your finger. Just don’t forget! The Avery Chamber Quarterly Breakfast hosted by Riverdog Coffee House and Cafe in Linville will begin at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20. The featured speaker will be Susan Freshcorn of the NCRLA/NC Restaurant and Lodging Association. Cost of breakfast is $5 per person. Also, don’t forget about the fundraiser to benefit the Avery Humane Society, the 5K Run and a Doggie Fun Walk on Saturday, May 24 at 9 a.m. Registration is now open at www.runsignup.com/race/NC/newland/pawsforacause. Runner registration fee is $25. Walkers can raise money by asking people to support their walk. You may bring your dog or a shelter dog can be provided for you to walk. And don’t forget about the open house for the Avery County Incubator on Saturday, May 17 from 12-4 p.m.

6) Dancing at Linville Land Harbor 

Sponsored by the Linville Land Harbor Ballroom Dance Group, dancing will be held on Saturday, May 24 from 7-9:45 p.m. There will be a dance lesson at 7 p.m. All dancers are welcome to enjoy an evening of dancing including the waltz, foxtrot, cha cha, rhumba, swing and tango. The admission is $5 per person. The Ballroom Dance Group donates all proceeds to a local charity. Please BYOB and snacks. Dress is business casual. The dance will be held at the Linville Land Harbor Recreation Hall which is located approximately two miles south of Linville on N.S. 221. No reservations are required. 7) Music Trails Workshop Cancelled

The Blue Ridge Music Trails workshop that was scheduled for Tuesday, May 20 at the Meadowbrook Inn and Suites has been cancelled.
