4) Farm to Table Dinner Fundraiser May 25

Come join us for a farm to table dinner at the River House in Grassy Creek on May 25 beginning at 6 p.m. The dinner will feature Chef Bill Klein with a wonderful 5 course meal. The food for the meal will be provided by New River Organic Growers from local farmers in the High Country. New River Organic Growers is a farmer’s cooperative of the High Country selling produce, meat, cheese and eggs. It was begun in 1998 to help farmers transition from growing tobacco. It has grown into a large cooperative selling local food to restaurants and retailers throughout the High Country and the Asheville area. NROG’s warehouse is located in Fleetwood. Last year was a very poor growing season for farmers because of record rainfall. Farmers lost potatoes and winter squash which are storage crops sold to get the cooperative through the winter. NROG also had to replace the engine on the delivery truck for the second time in two years which was a huge unexpected expense. Tickets can be purchased at www.newrivergrowers.com. The ticket price is $60 per person. You will get to meet the farmers who grow your food; they may even wait on your table. You will also meet the chef as he explains the preparation of the dishes. There will also be a raffle of great prizes from farmers and local businesses.
