1) Third Annual Watauga Humane Society Golf Tournament

The Blowing Rock Country Club will host the third annual Watauga Humane Society Golf Tournament on Friday, May 16 with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Team prizes, special events prizes and a hole-in-one prize (car provided by Friendship Honda) will be awarded. The format of the tournament is a Scramble (two best balls of a foursome). Individual registration is $135 or $540 for a team of four. The fee includes a chance to play at the Blowing Rock Country Club, golf cart and green fees, a free bag lunch and other goodies. After the game there will be a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres and the presentation of prizes. All proceeds of the tournament will provide for the animals’ care and shelter as they wait at the Watauga Humane Society for families to adopt them. 2) Stuart and Jan Omans Book Signing at Watauga Public Library May 3

On Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m., join local author Stuart Omans and illustrator Jan Omans in the Library Meeting Room for a bookselling and signing featuring the book “Ol’ Man on a Mountain’.

3) Quarterly Public Hearing and Planning Commission Meetings

On Monday, May 5 we will have a quarterly hearing in the Town Council Chambers at 7 p.m. On Monday, May 12, we will have a Planning Commission meeting in the Town Council Chambers at 6 p.m.

4) Campus Emergency Siren Test Conducted May 7

Appalachian State University will test its campus-wide siren warning system on Wednesday, May 7 at 11:55 a.m. The campus drill will also include a recorded message indicating the beginning and end of the test.

5) On the Same Page Festival Announces Opening of 2014 Writer’s Competition

Ashe County’s “On the Same Page Literary Festival” now in its seventh year is opening the Festival’s annual writing competition. In association with the 2014 Festival, which will take place Sept. 16-20, the Page Crafter’s Prize recognizes writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry with cash awards. Winning writers will have the opportunity to read their work during the On the Same Page Literary Festival. The Page Crafter’s Competition is designed to encourage and acknowledge emerging writers and to reinforce the commitment to celebrating the creation of new work. Page Crafter’s Prizes will be awarded for first and second place in fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Prize money totaling $900 will be presented: $200 for first place, $100 for second place in each category. The competition opens on April 21. Deadline for submissions is July 17 and winners will be notified by Aug. 21. Prose entries are limited to 1,000 words, no more than 50 lines of poetry will be accepted. A non-refundable entry fee of $10 (U.S.) per submission is required. There is no limit to the number of entries per person. The Festival’s website, www.onthesamepagefestival.org, provides further details, including format requirements for the blind-copy submission process. Only previously unpublished entries qualify. Authors retain all rights to submitted works. Winners need not be present to win, but are encouraged to attend the Festival and read their work at the Saturday, September 20, 2014, 2:30 p.m. Page Crafter’s award presentations.

6) Watauga Community Band’s Spring Performance held May 4

The Watauga Community Band will perform its annual Spring Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 in Rosen Concert Hall in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. The band, under the direction of Bill Winkler, will perform a variety of selections including Leroy Anderson’s Sandpaper Ballet and John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme. This is a free concert and everyone is welcome.

7) 4th annual Taste of Avery Held June 5

Come celebrate the beginning of the summer season with the fourth annual Taste of Avery. The event will be held at the Best Western Mountain Lodge located on N.C. 184 on June 5 from 6-8:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and are already going fast. We have sold out for the past three years, so don’t wait! Contact the Avery County Chamber of Commerce to purchase your tickets today and ensure that you do not miss out on this must-attend Avery County event. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Acoustic guitar music and cash bar will be available. It’s going to be a fabulous evening and a great opportunity to find your new favorite eatery or that much needed caterer for your next wedding, anniversary or casual party with friends. 8) Boone Area Lions Club Hosts Blood Drive May 6

The Boone Area Lions Club wants your blood! The lions are sponsoring a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Tuesday, May 6 from 1:30-6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express in Boone. There is a critical need for healthy blood, don’t pass up this opportunity to help out. To make an appointment, call 264-8226. 9) Benefit Art Auction for the Watauga Democratic Party at the Greenhouse May 2

More than 50 local and regional artists have donated work for a silent auction fundraiser at The Greenhouse located at 164 S. Depot Street in Boone on Friday, May 2 at 6 p.m. during the first Boone Art Crawl of the season. All proceeds from this event, hosted by Andrea Capua, Stephen Owen and friends will go to the Watauga County Democratic Party and its slate of candidates. For a minimum donation of $25, attendees will enjoy an open wine and beer bar, non-alcoholic beverages and hors d’oeuvres while listening to music played by the Todd Wright Quartet.

10) Free Cancer Screening May 9

A free melanoma and skin cancer screening will be held May 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Boone Dermatology, sponsored by Boone Dermatology and Appalachian Regional Healthcare System. The screenings are done on a first come first serve basis, no appointments necessary. The physicians and staff of Boone Dermatology will provide a full body check or spot check suspicious areas.
