1) Walker Center Presents “1964…The Tribute” May 9

The Walker Center on the campus of Wilkes Community College wraps up its 2013-2014 season with “1964…The Tribute” on Friday, May 9 at 8 p.m. This performance is sponsored by Wells Fargo. Since the early eighties, “1964” has been thrilling audiences around the globe by taking them on a journey through a quintessential moment in history that will live forever. Be a part of the journey on Friday, May 9 at the Walker Center. Sing along to favorite Beatles’ hits like “Yellow Submarine,” “Let It Be,” “Hey Jude,” “Help!” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “Day Tripper,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “Penny Lane.” More than 20 years of researching and performing have made “1964” masters of thier craft. They are hailed by critics and fans alike as the most authentic and endearing Beatles tribute, which has earned them the distinction from Rolling Stone Magazine as the “Best Beatles Tribute on Earth.” A limited number of tickets are available for this performance. 2) On the Same Page Literary Festival Hosts Writing Competition

The Ashe County On the Same Page Literary Festival, now in it seventh year, is opening the Festival’s annual writing competition. In association with the 2014 Festival which will take place Sept. 16-20 in Ashe County, the Page Crafter’s Prize recognizes writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry with cash awards. Winning writers will have the opportunity to read their work during the On the Same Page Literary Festival. The Page Crafter’s Competition is designed to encourage and acknowledge emerging writers and to reinforce the On the Same Page Literary Festival’s commitment of celebrating the creation of new work. Page Crafter’s Prizes will be awarded for first and second place in fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Prize money totaling $900 will be presented: $200 for first place, $100 for second place in each category. The competition opens on April 21, 2014. Deadline for submissions is July 17 and winners will be notified by Aug. 21. Prose entries are limited to 1,000 words, no more than 50 lines of poetry will be accepted. A non-refundable entry fee of $10 per submission is required. There is no limit to the number of entries per person. The website, www.OnTheSamePageFestival.org provides further details, including format requirements for the blind-copy submission process. Only previously unpublised entries qualify. Authors retain all rights to submitted works. Winners need not be present to win, but are encouraged to attend the festival and red their work on Sept. 20 for the award presentations.

3) In/Visible Theatre Performs “Kill Will” 

Kill Will is the latest creative endeavor from In/Visible Theatre. This collection of fight scenes from Shakespeare plays is written by the In/Visible Company, Derek Davidson, and also a guy named William Shakespeare. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. at the Valborg Theatre on the campus of Appalachian State University. Click here for tickets or purchase them 60 minutes before the show at Valborg Box Office.

4) Appalachian Rollergirls Host Fundraiser at Appalachian Mountain Brewery April 25

Appalachian RollerGirls will host a fundraiser at Appalachian Mountain Brewery in Boone from 7-11 p.m. on Friday, April 25. The money will be used to support ARG’s home game in Boone that takes place in August, and any profits will be donated to a local charity. At this event, ARG will be arm wrestling, posing for pictures, recruiting and promoting their next bout on May 10 at 2 p.m. at Skateland in Hickory.
