1) NC Poet Laureate Kicks Off Poetry Month with Public Events and Poet Posts

North Carolina Poet Laureate Joseph Bathanti kicks off National Poetry Month with the poem Joe-Joe, public events scheduled across the state and daily posts on NCArtsEveryday.org. Bathanti is an award-winning poet and professor of creative writing at Appalachian State University where he is also the director of creative writing in the field and Writer-In Residence in the university’s Watauga Global Community. A long-time advocate for literacy, Bathanti has traveled the state since his appointment in August 2012 working with veterans to share their stories of military service – including combat zones – through poetry. National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets and during the month Bathanti will conduct readings, discussions and signings so that North Carolina residents can learn and enjoy poetry. 

  • Sunday, April 6 from 2-4 p.m., Bathanti will read his work as part of salon series produced by John Amen of Pedestal Magazine and Carolina Actors Studio Theatre. Also reading will the poets Bluz, Tanya Bechtler, Scott Douglass and Diana Pickney. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for students. This event will be held at Carolina Actors Studio Theatre in Charlotte.
  • Tuesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. Joseph Bathanti will host a reading, discussion and book signing as part of the Sensoria Literary Festival at Tate Hall at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.
  • On Friday, April 11, at 7 p.m. Bethanti will give the keynote address at ArtsFest at Lipinski Hall at UNC-Asheville. 
  • Saturday, April 12 from 2-5 p.m. Bathanti will read his work and distribute student poetry awards at RiverLink’s awards ceremony and reception at Holly Library at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in Asheville. 
  • On Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m., Bathanti will read his work at the annual Watauga County Friends of the Library Celebration at the Watauga County Library on Queen Street in Boone. 
  • On Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m., Bathanti hosts the Richard T. Barker Friends of the Library Student Poetry Slam at Belk Library at Appalachian State University.
  • On Wednesday, April 16 at noon, Bathanti will read his work at the Warren County Public Library in Warrenton. 
  • On Tuesday, April 22, Bathanti will read his work at High Point Public Library in High Point. 
  • On Wednesday, April 23 at 4 p.m. Bathanti will read his work at High Point University.
  • On Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. Bathanti will read his work at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth.
  • On Saturday, April 26 at 5:15 p.m., the announcement of Sidney Lainer Poetry Competition winners will take place followed by readings, discussion and reception with Bathanti at Lanier Library. 
  • On Sunday, April 27, at 2 p.m. Bathanti reads his work as part of the North Carolina Poetry Society series at McIntyre’s Books in Pittsboro. 
  • On Monday, April 28 at 5 p.m., Bathanti will conduct a poetry workshop at Hickory Library in Hickory.
  • On Tuesday, April 29 at 7 p.m., Bathanti reads his work at Bethlehem Public Library in Hickory.

2) Run or Walk the Cubby Bear 5K in May

Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the 8th annual Cubby Bear 5K on Saturday, May 10. Proceeds from the race will go toward the Habitat Humanity fund at Cannon Memorial Hospital (CMH). “Running or walking the Cubby has become the highlight of the 5K season for our regular participants,” said Sallie Woodring, Chairperson for the Habitat House Build Committee at CMH. “This event has raised several thousand dollars for the Cannon Habitat build fund at CMH. “This event has raised several thousand dollars for the Cannon Habitat build fund since its inception in 2007.” The race begins at Camp Yonahnoka on the property of Linville Resorts. Participants will have an opportunity to register from 7-7:45 a.m. and the race will begin at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $25. Opportunities to register in advance are also available through www.apprhs.org by request. For those who register by May 2, the registration fee is $20. All participants will receive a t-shirt. Door prizes will be given away as well as prizes for the winners of the children and adult divisions. Water stations will be set up midway through the course and refreshments will be available at the end of the race. For more information, call 828-737-7538. 

3) Seventh Annual Girl Scouts’ Dessert Tasting and Silent Auction

The seventh annual Girl Scouts’ Dessert Tasting and Silent Auction will be held on Friday, April 11 from 7-9 p.m. at Boone United Methodist Church. The Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont and the participating restaurants invite you to attend the annual Girl Scout Cookie Challenge! Area chefs will use their choice of Girl Scout Cookies to create desserts to be sampled by the audience. The audience will serve as the panel of judges selecting the winning entry. Participating restaurants include Bandana’s, Farm Cafe, Higher Grounds Coffee Shoppe, Makoto’s, The Peddler, Primo’s and more. Tickets are available at the door for $8 per person or $12 for two.
