1) Organic Gardening 101

Monday through Thursday, July 22 through July 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $20 for all four days. Designed for beginning gardeners or those who would like to switch organic methods. Topics include: garden planning, seed starting, companion planting, how to attract beneficial insects, pest management, soil test and amendments, compositing and vermi-composting and dealing with common plant problems. Visit several home gardens for inspiration. 

2) Caring for Chickens in the Home Setting

An optional session will be held on Friday, June 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on chicken care for an additional $5. You do not have to participate in the Organic 101 classes to attend the class on caring for chickens. Chicken care topics include: heritage breeds, facilities, feeding, disease prevention, egg production and meat chicken. Space is limited so reserve your spot by paying in advance at NC Cooperative Extension, 971 W. King Street, Boone. Held at the Farm Incubator and Grower Project, previous site of ASU sustainable development farm in Valle Crucis. Directions to ASU Sustainable Farm in Valle Crucis: Take NC 105 to Broadstone Road, turn right, drive three miles to the intersection of NC 194 (in front of Valle Crucis Elementary). Turn left onto NC 194 S., drive one mile, turn left on Dutch Creek Road. Farm is on the left. 

3) Writer’s Workshop Series at the Harrill Senior Center

Are you a writer or have you ever wanted to try it? Writer/humorist Vicki Wentz will be leading a four class series called “Write Your Way” on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 – 3 p.m. starting July 9 and ending July 18. Learn skills for writing memoirs, creative writing and humor depending upon your interest. Pre-registration required by 1:30 p.m. on July 9. Cost is $30 for the four class session.
