1) News for Heritage Hall Theatre in Mountain City

The Heritage Hall team is deeply grateful to all who have supported the performing arts as performers, patrons, sponsors, volunteers or Curtain Raisers. We are looking forward to serving the Mountain Empire with more great entertainment at reasonable prices in 2014. Heritage Hall will open its 2014 Season on Feb. 20 with the Barter Players’ production of Little House on the Prairie, sponsored by The Tomahawk, H&R Block and Dr. Don and Carole Tarr. All tickets are $5. Heritage Hall is a nonprofit organization whose mission it is to bring quality performing arts events with affordable pricing to Johnson County and the surrounding area and to provide a nice facility in which local schools and organizations can perform. Tickets may be purchased by phone with a credit or debit card and retrieved the night of the performance at the door. For further scheduling information, click here. 2) Harmonia Baroque Performs Jan. 21

The Hayes School of Music’s Faculty Performance Series opens spring semester with a Jan. 21 program by Harmonia Baroque, a faculty ensemble that specializes in music from the 17th and 18th centuries. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Ensemble members are Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham, Alicia Chapman, Priscilla Porterfield, Corinne Cassini and Michael Bell. They will perform works by Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, Benedetto Marcello, Maurizio Cazzati and Antonio Vivaldi. 

3) Tai Chi Classes at Senior Center 

Two 12-week sessions of beginner and intermediate Tai Chi will begin on Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center instructed by Tim Winecoff. The intermediate classes will be held on Thursday afternoons from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a 5:30-6:30 class for beginner students. The deadline for registration is 4:30 p.m. on the first day of class. Any age may join but priority will be given to persons aged sixty and older. The cost is $50 per person for either 12-week series. The Senior Center is located in the Human Services building at 132 Poplar Grove Connector in Boone. Call the center at 265-8090.

4) Zumba Gold at the Harrill Senior Center

Join us for Zumba Gold! Cynthia Carlson, our Zumba instructor, has obtained the Zumba Gold license. Zumba Gold follows the same Zumba format only with low impact Latin and International dances. This class meets from 4-5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the dining room of the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center in Boone. Free for people aged 60 and older but donations are accepted and the fee is $3 for persons under 60 per class. 

5) Todd Bush’s New Photography Exhibit Opens in Linville March 1

Todd Bush has been capturing and sharing images of the High Country since 1990. His photographs travel from his commercial photography studio and gallery in Banner Elk to nearby venues and around the world. In addition to local interest, natural beauty and fascinating captures Bush hopes his photography will “serve to raise awareness of the wonders of the world, inspiring keeping our planet’s natural places intact for future generations.” Dickson Gallery is a beautiful exhibit space in the hospital on the first floor that looks out over scenic Grandfather Mountain. 6) Contra Dance News

The Boone Country Dancers will present a community contra dance on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Old Cove Creek School gym at 207 Dale Adams Road in Sugar Grove. Class for beginning contra dancers will begin at 7:30 p.m. The dance will run from 8-11 p.m. with a waltz and covered dish treat break at 9 p.m. Please wear soft soled shoes to the dance and bring a sweet treat or snack to share at the break, if you are so inclined. Coming to Sugar Grove to perform for the dance will be the band Boom Chuck from Asheville. Calling for the dance will be Anne-Marie Walter from Asheville. For more information, call 828-406-0580.
