1) 50 Free Radon Testing Kits Available at NC Cooperative Extension

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services has sent radon testing kits to the Watauga county center. They are available on a first come-first serve basis. Stop by 971 West King Street to pick up your kit or call 264-3061. Watauga County is ranked as a zone 1 county, meaning that some of the highest levels in the state have been detected. For more information, check out ncradon.org. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Randon is an odorless, tasteless and invisible gas produced by the decay of naturally occurring uranium in soil and water. Radon is found in outdoor air and in the indoor air of buildings of all kinds. EPA recommends homes be fixed if radon level is 4 pCi.L (picocuries per liter) or more.

2) Watauga Winds Youth Quintet

Shoppers at the Boone Mall on Wednesday night had the opportunity to hear live music played by The Watauga Winds Youth Quintet. The group serenaded shoppers with an assortment of Christmas carols and traditional pieces. The Watauga Winds Youth Quintet is composed of five local students: flautist Mary Margaret Zrull, a junior at Watauga High School; oboist Kasey Stokes, who is a freshman; French horn player Owen Warmuth, also a freshman; clarinetist Sammy Osborne, an eighth grader at Valle Crucis; and bassoonist Aidan Williams, an eighth grader at Hardin Park. The quintet is coached by a group of local professional musicians: Frank Wangler, Kay and Frank Borkowski, Jessica Warner, Stephanie Blaha and Laura Chu Stokes. Thanks to donations from shoppers, the group raised almost $70 for the Watauga High School Band.
