1) Illusory Permanence: The Persistence of Nature on Display at Looking Glass Gallery

“Illusory Permanence: The Persistence of Nature,” an exhibition by Bachelor of Fine Arts candidate Katherine Meeks will be on display through Dec. 13 in Looking Glass Gallery located in Appalachian State University’s Plemmons Student Union. A reception will be held in the gallery from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13. In this display, Meeks explores the relationship between the human desire for order and the tendency of nature toward disorder. Her combination of photography, ceramics, industrial objects and live plants creates an environment in which viewers can interact with her creative exploration of the persistence of nature in the man-made world. Meeks will graduate from Appalachian in May 2014 with a BFA in studio art and a Bachelor of Science in art education (K-12). A.N.C. Teaching Fellow, Meeks plans to teach in a North Carolina public school. Meeks and Looking Glass Gallery would like to extend a special thanks to Appalachian’s Office of Student Research and Research Institute for the Environment, Energy and Economics, and the Randolph A. Johnson Endowment for Art for helping fund this project.
