1) Appalachian Women’s Theatre Troupe Presents Inaugural Production Nov. 23 and 24

The newly formed Appalachian Women’s Theatre Troupe presents its inaugural production, Madeline George’s “The Most Massive Woman Wins” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24. The show will be performed in the intimate I.G. Greer Studio Theatre on the Appalachian State University campus. Ticket prices are $5 for Appalachian students, faculty and staff with an $8 admission price for the general public. Tickets are available at the door one-half hour prior to each performance. This is a one-act play focusing on the psychological journey of four women trying to understand themselves and the physical journeys that brought them to a liposuction clinic. The characters in the play-Sabine, Rennie, Cel and Carly- find themselves lost in the idea of beauty and a world that allows others to dictate how they think these women should appear. Savannah Core, a senior theatre performance major, directs the production. The Appalachian Women’s Theatre Troupe is dedicated to creating performance opportunities for female theatre enthusiasts as well as promoting women in the arts both on campus and in the community.

2) Shakespeare Scholar Ralph Alan Cohen to Speak Dec. 2

Dr. Ralph Alan Cohen, noted Shakespeare scholar and co-founder of the American Shakespeare Center in Virginia will discuss “The Role of the Arts in Building Community Economies” at Appalachian State University Dec. 2 and 7 p.m. His lecture will be presented in the Valborg Theatre. It is free and open to the public. His visit is co-sponsored by the university’s Forum Committee, Hayes School of Music, Department of Economics and Department of Theatre and Dance. 

3) Lees-McRae Performing Arts Presents The Ash Girl

Get ready for a night at the theatre. The Lees-McRae Performing Arts Department is proud to present The Ash Girl, which will premiere in Hayes Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public. This is a dark yet comic rendition of the Cinderella story- the age old rags to riches tale with a few twists,” said director Anna Ward. “This version is more adult and incorporates the Seven Deadly Sins as animal monsters. We have an amazing cast and crew and this production should be one for the ages and a definite must see for all who are able.” The Ash Girl is scheduled for Nov. 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. with a final matinee on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. All performances will be in the Broyhill Theatre in Hayes Auditorium. Tickets are free for all Lees-McRae students, faculty and staff. Adult tickets are $12 and student/child tickets are $5. Tickets are only sold at the door. The box office opens one hour before show time.

4) Walker Center Presents Home for the Holidays

The Walker Center, on the campus of Wilkes Community College, will present American Big Band’s “Home for the Holidays” on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. This performance is sponsored by Carolina West Wireless. American Big Band, a show stopping synthesis of big band and Broadway, will perform holiday hits from Bing to Buble for the Christmas performance. The cast of 8 performers, accompanied by a 12-piece big band, deliver excitement from the dawn of the big band era through the decades into the 21st Century. 5) Beanstalk Community Theatre Performance

BeanStalk Community Theatre presents its holiday production “The One and Only Santa Claus” on Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. and Dec. 6 and 7 at 7 p.m. at Harvest House. Tickets can be purchased at Andrew McDonough’s State Farm Insurance Office, 450 New Market Boulevard, Suite 1 in Boone and at the door one hour prior to each performance. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 18. Refreshments and a holiday gift basket raffle will be available each night.
