1) Dicus Inks One for 2014-15 Season

Appalachian State University men’s golf head coach Bill Dicus announced the signing of Jacob Smith for the 2014-15 season. Smith, a Roebuck, S.C. native, will join the Mountaineers after an outstanding career at Dorman High School. Smith was a Rebel Invitational all-tournament selection in 2011 and 2012 and a member of the Spartanburg County Championship all-tournament team in 2012. In 2013, Smith was a Blythwood Invitational all-tournament selection and a Regional AAAA all-region team pick. Smith was also named most valuable player in 2013 for Dorman.

2) Watauga County GOP Executive Committee Meeting 

The Watauga County Republican Party will hold its monthly Executive Committee meeting Thursday, Nov. 21 from 6-7 p.m. at the Golden Corral in Boone. Special guest in George Ehrhardt. 

3) Lees-McRae Women’s Volleyball Players Earn Conference Carolinas Academic Honors

Lees-McRae College seniors Haydn Beatty and Molly Corhn have been named to the Conference Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Academic all-conference team for the first time in their careers, announced league officials Thursday. King University led the way with six selections, as Mount Olive College earned four and Barton College and Belmont Abbey College each placed three on the all-academic team. Lees-McRae, Converse College and Erskine College each garnered three selections. Lees-McRae is expected to return four letter-winners from this season, including rising juniors Angela Morse and Jordan Banta. 

4) Santa Paws Comes to Town Nov. 22 to Benefit the Watauga Humane Society

Students at Appalachian State University will host Santa Paws, a family/pet portrait session, with Santa on Friday, Nov. 22 from 5-8 p.m. to benefit the Watauga Humane Society. The event will be held in the Irma Baker Lyons Adoption Center at 312 Paws Way in Boone. The event is free to the public with photographs available for $20 and $10 for students. Santa Paws is an annual event that invites local animal lovers to bring their four-legged and two legged loved ones to enjoy a night of holiday fun and have their family and pet portrait taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Soft drinks and hot cider will be served. A bake sale will offer special holiday treats and homemade dog treats for purchase, the SNIPS Home-Crafted Holiday Sale will offer gifts for friends and loved ones, and stockings will be strung throughout the facility welcoming donations of toys and treats. This event has been organized by students in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies’ Introduction to Not-for-Profit Management class in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Watauga Humane Society and the homeless animals it shelters. A second Santa Paws session and the annual Open House will be held at the adoption center Saturday, Dec. 7, from 1-4 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the animals at the adoption center and strengthen the programs offered to the local community by the Watauga Humane Society.
