1) Repertory Orchestra and Concert Band to Perform Nov. 18

Music lovers are invited to join the Appalachian Repertory Orchestra and the Appalachian Concert Band for a joint performance Monday, Nov. 18. The program begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free. Will Selle directs the repertory orchestra’s program comprised of “Procession of the Nobles” by Rimsky Korsakov, “Largo” from “Symphony No. 9” also known as the “New World Symphony,” by Antonin Dvorak, “Pavane pour une infante defunte” by Maurice Ravel and selections from “Carmen Suite Nos. 1 and 2” by George Bizet. The concert band will perform “Pastime with Good Company” by King Henry VIII arranged by Philip Sparke, “Pas Redouble” by Camille Saint-Saens, “Kirkpatrick Fanfare” by Andrew Boysen, “Irish Tune from County Derry” by Percy Grainger and “Toccata” by Gaspar Cassado. Conductors are Dr. John Stanley Ross, director of bands in the Hayes School of Music; Dr Kevin Gray Richardson, associate director of bands; and graduate students Brooke Humfeld and Justin Hensley. 

2) Brass Choir and Guitar Orchestra Perform at the Hayes School of Music 

Upcoming performances at the Hayes School of Music include a Nov. 19 concert by the Appalachian Brass Choir and a Nov. 21 performance by the Appalachian Guitar Orchestra. Admission to both performances is free. The Appalachian Brass Choir performs at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Directed by Dr. Karen Robertson, the choir will perform “Ceremonial Fanfare” by Aaron Copland, “Theme and Variations” by Verne Reynolds, “Sursum Corda” by Edward Elgar and “Shepherd’s Hey” by Percy Grainger. The Guitar Orchestra, directed by Dr. Douglass James, performs at 8 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. The orchestra will perform “Concerto Grosso No. 8” known as the “Christmas Concerto” by Arcangelo Corelli, “Attic” by Andrew York, “La Danza del Marsyas” by Brian DuFord, “Overture” to “La Gazza Ladra” by Gioacchino Rossini and “Celtic Suite” by Alan Hirsh. Joining the orchestra will be Oran Dickens, clarinet, Erica Spear, flute, John Barnes, violin and Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham, flute and tin whistle.
