1) Spooky Duke Race Held Oct. 25

Runners, walkers and those with wheels: Parent to Parent invites you to the Spooky Duke Race on Saturday, Oct. 25 to begin and end at the Raley/Peacock Parking Lot at Appalachian State University in Boone. Activities include a certified 10K run, a certified 5L run, a costume march for all ages and supervised children’s activities. The route of the races begins at the Raley Parking lot, continues through downtown Boone, and ends at Raley Parking lot.  The Costume March, a leisurely ½ mile stroll, also begins and ends at the Raley Parking lot.  Be ready for Spooky Surprises along the routes! Free childcare is available for race participants.  The supervised activities for children are also open to the public from 8 to 10 a.m.  Participating children will receive a gift bag.  Parent to Parent especially welcomes children and families not participating in the races to join us for this morning of fun and spookiness.  Come in costume, if you’d like to take part in the Costume March, both children and adults alike. In the event of rain, the children’s’ activities will be held indoors in Edwin-Duncan Hall adjacent to the Raley/Peacock Parking Lot. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female winners of both the 10K and 5K run.  Awards include gift certificates to the ASU bookstore and mugs crafted by Patti Carmen, local potter.   Awards will also be given to the winners of the Costume March by age category, as well as to costumed groups and to dogs in costume.  The Costume March will be judged on the basis of the costume’s creativity.  In addition, many door prizes will be given away.  Race participants will receive T-shirts on a first come, first served basis. Race participants and the public of all ages are encouraged to take part in the Costume March and contest. The Spooky Duke Race, is the 4th Annual Charles R. Duke Race for Families, sponsored by and benefitting Parent-to-Parent FSN-HC, a local non-profit organization that serves our 7 county mountain area  by providing resources and support to families with children who face special needs challenges. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Raley/Peacock Parking Lot, Appalachian State University, 416 Howard St Boone, NC US 28608. 2) Watauga Soil and Water Board Meeting Held Oct. 22

The Watauga Soil and Water Board will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 8 a.m. at 971 West King St. in Boone. The public is invited to attend.

3) Call for Artists and Crafters for Satie’s Holiday Sale

The Caldwell Arts Council is seeking artists and crafters to participate in the annual Satie’s Holiday Show and Sale Dec. 5-24, when the entire Arts Council is converted to a gift shop full of locally handcrafted items for holiday sales. Items for the holiday sale will be juried by the Satie’s Holiday Committee. All items must be handmade of quality materials and construction and the most successful items each year are those priced less than $50. The council is always looking for a variety of exciting new gift items especially for children and men, and new food items for the sale. If interested, bring samples of items you wish yo sell to the Caldwell Arts Council prior to Nov. 5 to be juried in. For submission guidelines click here. 4) High Country Home Energy Contest

Three households in need will receive home energy upgrades worth thousands of dollars just in time for winter. With upgrades, winners will save up to 40 percent on their monthly utility bills.
