Email Announcements Received Today: See What’s Going On Around The Community

1) Storm Center Screening at Watauga County Library

High Country Lifelong Learners in association with the Watauga County Public Library invite you to join for a movie viewing of the Storm Center on Oct. 13 from 2-4:30 p.m. The 1956 movie starring Bette Davis is about a small town librarian who is branded a Communist by local politicians when she refuses to withdraw a controversial book from the library’s shelves. This is the first overtly anti-McCarthyism film to be produced in Hollywood. The film has an MPAA rating of unrated and an approximate run time of 85 minutes.

2) Adult Learning Series Held at Watauga Public Library Oct. 11

Join Dr. Ming Singer for the next installment of the “mind and consciousness” adult learning series. This Saturday, Oct. 1, the topic of discussion is “information and electronic technologies and the mind.” This session would be ideal for anyone interested in the effects of technology on the mind. The event is free and open to the public.

3) Final Guided Tour of Cone Manor Held Oct. 19

Open House Wednesdays at Cone Manor are finished for the season. The final guided tours of Cone Manor for the 2014 season will be Sunday, Oct. 19.

4) CCC&TI Announces Free Small Business Workshops

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Small Business Center has announced several upcoming free seminars for Caldwell and Watauga counties.

How To Start a Business (Caldwell)

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Small Business Center will host a free seminar from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9 titled “How To Start a Business” at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir. Participants will identify the personal qualities and skills of successful entrepreneurs, complete a self-assessment and learn the basics of how to start a small business. Topics include an overview of business structures, community analysis, licensing and zoning, trademarks, copyrights, patents, insurance, financing, record keeping and taxes.

eBay Help for Small Businesses (Watauga)

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Small Business Center will offer a series of free seminars on boosting business with eBay. The speaker for each event, all of which are held at the Watauga County Library in Boone, is eBay Education Specialist Nick Hawks. The 3-part series schedule is:

  • eBay Your Way to Success, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14.
  • Building Your Business on eBay, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21.
  • eBay Stores, 6 p.m. To 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28.

Starting on the Right Foot: The Proper Basics of Starting a Business (Watauga)

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Small Business Center will host a free seminar from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the Appalachian Enterprise Center in Boone. This seminar will offer the basics on how to start a small business and the basic issues that must be addressed in order for that new business to succeed.

Developing an Online Presence for Your Business (Caldwell)

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Small Business Center will host a free seminar from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir. This class is about making sure business owners have a good online presence and are using free internet tools to their advantage to develop a top-notch online profile. The presenter is Matt Rudisill, owner and lead trainer of The Leadership Academy.

Social Media Marketing (Caldwell)

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Small Business Center will host a free seminar titled “Social Media Marketing” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 27 at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center. This class offers a general overview of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest as well as newer platforms for marketing a business. The presenter is Matt Rudisill, owner and lead trainer of The Leadership Academy.

Marketing Your Business for Success (Caldwell)

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s Small Business Center will host a free seminar titled “Marketing Your Business for Success” from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir. This seminar will help small business owners understand how to market their products and services in a way that will increase the success of their operation.

5) The Girl Code/Guy Code Tour Comes to Appalachian Oct. 9

The Girl Code/Guy Code Tour featuring comedian Jordan Carlos and guest Phoebe Robinson will bring a night full of laughter to teh stage of the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. on Oct. 9. The MTV series “Girl Code” is a female driven comedy series that brings millennial viewers a new, hilarious how-to manual of over-the-top tips to  push the envelope and open dialogue about the wonders and woes of womanhood. The series calls on female stand-up comics, actresses, musicians and even a few guys to weigh in. MTV2’s series “Guy Code” is a hilarious guy’s guide to manhood and a playbook for the “bro code.” The show covers a range of topics from dating advice to karaoke etiquette. “Guy Code” wants to keep all guys up to date on the rules with today’s top comics, athletes, entertainers and even some experts. Carlos is a Brooklyn-based stand-up coming brought up in suburban North Dallas. He appeared most notably as Alan on “The Colbert Report” and starred in MTV’s “I Just Want My Pants Back.” He currently appears on “Guy Code,” “Girl Code,” and “Guy Court.” Carlos has appeared in the films “Gost Town” and “The Rebound.” This summer he will appear in the film “My Own Love Song” with Renee Zellewegger and Forest Whitaker. Robinson is a New York City stand-up comedian who also serves as a writer for “Girl Code.” Robinson was a finalist for NBC’s “Stand Up for Diversity” and has performed in numerous comedy festivals. Robinson is also a writer for Glamour.com, and was recently declared one of the “18 Funny Women You Should Be Following On Twitter” by The Huffington Post. The cost is $5 for Appalachian students in advance and $7 for the public and at the door.
