1) Fees Waived at Four Sites on National Public Lands Day

The U.S. Forest Service National Forests in North Carolina is waiving fees at four popular locations Saturday, Sept. 27, in honor of National Public Lands Day. The agency will waive fees at the Cradle of Forestry, Roan Mountain, Whiteside Mountain and Whitewater Falls. These popular sites are located in the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests. National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. For more information, visit http://www.publiclandsday.org/.

2) Yours Truly, Tom Dooley Presented by Community Theatre

A new play about an old legend! YOURS TRULY, TOM DOOLEY written by Johnson County resident Patti Clark will be performed on October 3, 4, 10, 11 at 7pm and October 5 at 3pm at Heritage Hall in Mountain City, TN. 3) High Country Cross County Classic held Sept. 27

On Saturday September 27 Watauga High Cross Country will be hosting the High Country Cross Country Classic on the Watauga High CC course. The course sits below Jack Groce Stadium adjacent to the Greenway.

25 teams from North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina will be represented by over 600 runners. There are 6 races.

10:00am     JV Girls 5K Race
10:30am     JV Boys 5K Race
11:00am     Varsity Girls 5K Race
11:30am     Varsity Boys 5K Race

The Girls Varsity race will be headlined by Holly Bailey, Melissa Zamitti, Zoey Bezanson, and Jessica Wynblatt (Lake Norman HS), Kathleen Mansure (Watauga HS), Frances Massey (East Lincoln HS), Shawnda Martin (Robbinsville HS),  Paige McKinney and Malea Smith (Hough HS),  and Erin Jameson (Ronald Reagan HS)

The Boys Varsity race will be headlined by Ryan Peck (Wheeler HS, GA), Frank Cline (Robbinsville, NC), Jack Mastandrea, Wes Anderson, Wyatt Fedorka, and Ty Sauerbrey (Lake Norman HS), Shad McGrew (Matthews-Butler HS), Elijah Carter (Asheville HS), and Micahel Holland (Watauga HS) in the top 10.

4) Blueprints and Bow Ties Held Oct. 2

Watauga County Habitat for Humanity will hold Blueprints and Bowties on Oct. 2. The live auction and cocktail reception will feature auctioneer Jesse Miller and live music by Melissa Reeves. Also offered will be a Farm to Table menu of heavy appetizers from High Country local farms. The special guest will be executive chef and former Dean of Johnson and Wales, Mark Allison. A cash bar for beer and wine will be provided by Appalachian Mountain Brewery. The event will take place Oct. 2 from 6:30-10:30 p.m. at the former High Country Inn Waterwheel Restaurant, now the Boone Bagelry, located at 125 Graduate Lane off of N.C. 105.
