1) Woolly Worm Woad Wace Held Oct. 11

The five-mile Woolly Worm Woad Wace will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11 beginning at the Lees-McRae College track in Banner Elk at 9 a.m. The one-mile fun run will be held at 10:15 a.m. The races are being held the week prior to the annual Woolly Worm Festival held annually in downtown Banner Elk. Preregistration for the five-miler is $25. Race day registration, which begins at 7:30 a.m., is also offered for $30. Fun run registration for kids ages 12 and under is $10. The events are sponsored by the Williams YMCA and the Avery County Chamber of Commerce. The race will start and end at the Lees-McRae track and will loop through some of Banner Elk’s back roads and onto the trails on the grounds of the Holston Camp. Rolling hills and beautiful scenery make this course both challenging and fun, race officials said.

2) Farm and Field Exhibition at the Art Cellar Gallery

Animals of Farm and Field features four artists: Carolyn Blaylock, Nancy Oppenheimer, Margaret Salisbury and Walter Stanford Sept. 17 through Oct. 18. The opening reception with the artists will be held on Oct. 4 from 4-6 p.m. Also during the show the gallery will be taking donations of goods and financial contributions that will benefit the Avery County Humane Society. Please drop off your donations to the Art Cellar Gallery or the Avery County Humane Society.

3) Watauga Community Band Hosts Voices of Freedom Concert Sept. 21

The Watauga County Community Band will be participating in the Voices of Freedom Concert this Sunday at 3 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall in the Broyhill Music Center at Appalachian State University. The WCB is made up of local and visiting music lovers of all ages and performs frequently in the area. Other individuals and groups will also be performing for the purpose of promoting peace and harmony. The Oom-Pah Band from the Watauga Community Band will be performing German-style music on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the gazebo of the Blowing Rock Park in Blowing Rock. This is a small ensemble from the larger WCB, performing in conjunction with Blowing Rock’s celebration of Music and Arts Month. Come and enjoy the music.

4) Pineola Ringers In Need of Volunteers for the Handbell Choir

The Pineola Ringers is in serious need of three volunteers to become members of the Pineola Ringers handbell choir. Due to work schedules and other things that have happened, they have three vacancies. The bells are very easy to play; ringers to not have to read music, and the age requirement is minimal. Requirements to become a bell ringer are: desire to become part of a very unique and fun musical group, be able to read, count, distinguish colors and tell the right hand from the left hand. Rehearsals are held on Sundays at 2 p.m. in the fellowship room of Pineola Presbyterian Church.

5) Affordable Care Act Information Session Held at Watauga County Library Sept. 22

Join Watauga County Outreach Eligibility Specialist Eric Schneider for an Affordable Care Act information session at the Watauga County Public Library on Monday, Sept. 22 from 5:30-7 p.m. In these sessions, guests will explore the new health care laws and answer common questions about The Health Insurance Marketplace so you can prepare yourself for 2014-15 open enrollment. 6) Community Appearance Commission Meeting Held Sept. 23

A meeting of the Town of Boone Community Appearance Commission will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Planning and Inspections upstairs conference room located at 680 W. King St.

7) Watauga Soil and Water Board Meeting Held Sept. 24

The Watauga Soil and Water Board will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 8 a.m. at 971 West King St. in Boone. The public is invited to attend.
