1) Last Chance Golf Tournament Held Sept. 23

The 23rd annual Boone Area Chamber of Commerce Last Chance Golf Tournament will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Linville Ridge Country Club. Registration time is 8:30 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 10 a.m. The tournament will be a Texas Scramble with two net best balls. Entry fee is $200 per player which includes green fees, cart fees, golf shirt, two mulligans, lunch on the course, two beverage tickets and Pub Grub after you play and more. 2) BUMC Fall Bazaar Held Sept. 19-20

The unofficial kick off of autumn in the High Country is right around the corner. The Fall Bazaar at Boone United Methodist Church has become so popular over the past 30 years that now thousands attend in search of hidden treasures and bargains, good food and fellowship. Located at 471 New Market Boulevard, directly behind the New Market Shopping Center, the church’s annual Fall Bazaar will be held Friday, Sept. 19 from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 20, from 7:30-11 a.m. Features include furniture, computers and electronics, sports equipment, clothing of all kinds, handmade crafts, Christmas items, jams and jellies, baked goods, new and previewed books and videos, yard sale items as well as “down home” country cooking. Saturday brings the famous bag sale and half price sale that begins at 7:30 a.m. An old fashioned country breakfast will be served on Friday morning with muffins available on Saturday morning. This year our Friday Lunch will be a benefit for the Lisa and Jay Erwin Medical Fund to purchase a handicapped accessible van and expenses the family has incurred since Jay’s paralyzing accident in August 2013. A silent auction featuring antiques, a large amount of unique furniture and many new items from local businesses will accept bids on Friday, Sept. 19 until 6 p.m. The bazaar is one of the church’s main events involving more than 500 volunteers of all ages serving more than 6,000 hours. The event benefits the church building fund as well as many local missions. The bazaar has evolved into one of the most fun and effective ways of recycling used furniture and other items. 3) Evening of Encores Performed Sept. 9

If you have a favorite classic music composition for piano, voice or woodwinds, or perhaps a movie theme, you are in luck. Faculty from the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University will perform audience favorites during “An Evening of Encores” Sept. 9 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free and the public is invited. The program will open with “Toccata” by John Weaver, performed by organist Joby Bell. Mezzo-soprano Priscilla Porterfield and pianist Bair Shagdaron will team up for three works by Samuel Barber. Rodney Reynerson will perform Chopin’s “Nocturne in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27, No.1.” Works for cello will be performed by Corinne Cassini. Douglas James will be featured on classical guitar. Alto saxophonist Scott Kallestad will perform “Joy Ride” from the movie “Catch Me If You Can.” Other faculty featured on the program are Alicia Chapman, oboe; Susan Slingland, piano; Hiu-Wah Au, piano; Douglas Miller, E-Flat clarinet; Jon Beebe, bassoon; Christina Hayes, piano; John Fowler, tenor; Keith McCutchen, piano and Rob Falvo, percussion.

4) Mind and Consciousness Discussion Series Held at Watauga County Library

Join Dr. Ming Singer for a multi-part learning opportunity focusing on the mind, the science of the brain and consciousness. These programs are weekly from mid-August to mid-October. All are welcome, these sessions are free and open to the public. Topics will include The Mind at Journey’s End (Sept. 5), The Creative Mind (Sept. 12), Mysticism (Sept. 19), Language and The Silent Language (Sept. 26), Making Decisions (Oct. 3), Information and Electronic Technologies and the Mind (Oct. 11) and Emotion (Oct. 18).

5) Educational Seminars at Appalachian Focus on Science and Sustainability

A series of seminars focusing on science and sustainability will be presented by the Mathematics and Science Education Center at Appalachian State University beginning Sept. 18. The seminars are free and open to the public. Teachers can earn 0.2 continuing education units per seminar.
