2) Girl Scouts Enter Free at Grandfather Mountain Sept. 13

The 44th annual Girl Scout Day is set for Sept. 13 at Grandfather Mountain, offering free admission and fascinating nature activities for participating troops. The tradition started in 1971 when Grandfather Mountain “adopted” the Girl Scouts. The Scouts returned the gesture by adopting the Mountain’s late mascot, Mildred the Bear, as an honorary Girl Scout and presenting her with pins to mark her years with the organization. “We’re happy to invite the Girl Scouts once again to explore Grandfather Mountain,” said Kellen Short, public relations specialist for Grandfather Mountain. “This is a great place to learn skills like confidence, environmental awareness and teamwork.” All Girl Scouts and the troop leader are admitted free with proof of membership. Discounted admission is available for others joining the scouts. The 2014 event will focus on birds, starting with a program on Bird Nests and Wings where staff naturalists will explain why birds migrate and which types are found on Grandfather Mountain. Scouts use natural materials to build bird nests and learn how they are constructed. At 11 a.m., join the staff of the Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute at Lees-McRae College to see numerous species of live birds. The institute cares for injured and orphaned wildlife and works to educate the public about these species. At 1 p.m., a Beginner Birder session will be held to help scouts learn how to identify bird species through interactive and practical tips. Staff will introduce Grandfather Mountain’s educational owls, Herbie, Zoey and Shakespeare in an Animal Encounter at 2:15 p.m. The afternoon concludes with a Hawk Watch near the Mile High Swinging Bridge to look for raptors and birds of prey as they migrate south. Other optional activities include a  morning bird walk at 9 a.m. and a high-elevation hike at 10:30 a.m. These activities require registration due to space limitations.
