1) Boone Service League Meets Sept 2

The Boone Service League, a women’s service organization, meets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Deerfield Methodist Church in Boone. Light refreshments and fellowship begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting at 7 p.m. Child care is available. 2) Agave Baroque Performs Sept. 17 at Appalachian

The ensemble Agave Baroque with countertenor Reginald Mobley will perform Sept. 17 at Appalachian State University. The program begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free and the public is invited. Titled “La Famiglia Bach: Bach family works and their Italian roots,” the program features works by J.S. Bach, his family members and composers Isabelle Leonarda and Johann Rosenmuller. Works to be performed include Rosenmuller’s “Sonata Quarta,” Leonarda’s “Sonata Quarta,” “Toccata in E minor” by J.S. Bach, a sinfonia from “Siehe, wie fein und lieblich” by Georg Chrisoph Bach and an orchestral suite in G minor by Johann Bernard Bach. Agave Baroque is a San Francisco Bay Area based ensemble specializing in string chamber music of the 17th century. Agave has received numerous awards and accolades and gained local and national attention for its vibrant performances and growing discography. Now in its sixth season, Agave debuts a new and expanded lineup and continues to be a unique and innovative voice in the early music community. Members of the ensemble are Aaron Westman and Natalie Carducci, baroque violin; William Skeen, viola da gamba; Kevin Cooper, baroque guitar and theorbo; and Henry Lebedinsky, harpsichord and organ.

3) Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church Celebrates 75th Anniversary Nov. 3

On Sunday, Nov. 3, Baird’s Creek Presbyterian Church will celebrate its 75th anniversary. We will worship together with a traditional worship service at 11 a.m. and follow that with an old-fashioned covered-dish dinner in our fellowship hall. Plans are still underway, so save the date and expect a formal invitation.

4) Avery Chamber Seeks Nominations for 2014 Man, Woman and Business of the Year

The Avery County Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for Man of the Year, Woman of the Year and Business of the Year for 2014. Those interested in nominating a person or business for one of these awards should send a letter or email to the Chamber discussing the nominee’s qualifications for this recognition. The deadline for nominations will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Nominations may be faxed to 828-898-8287 or emailed to director@averycounty.com or stop by the Chamber office open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

5) Suggestive Structures Opening Soon at the Smith Gallery

The Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University presents Suggestive Structures, a new exhibition of works by Angela Piehl and Mark Cowardin. Suggestive Structures will be on view from Sept. 8 through Oct. 24. The artists will be on campus from Sept. 2 through 5 interacting with students and working on a collaborative project with 32 art students that will be included in the exhibition. Piehl and Cowardin will also give a lecture on Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Belk Library and Information Commons. Suggestive Structures is curated by Smith Gallery Director Jody Servon, an associate professor in the Department of Art.

6) Caldwell Arts Council Announces Call for Artists for Hues and Brews Studio Tour and Festival

The Caldwell Arts Council is now accepting applications from Caldwell County and surrounding counties’ artists and crafters who want to participate in the new Hues and Brews Studio Tour on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 19 a.m. until 3 p.m. Participants can set up in their Caldwell County homes or studios or set up in a local business to display, demonstrate and sell their work. Registration is $30. Following the countywide studio tour, the event will culminate with the Hues and Brews Festival on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 2-6 p.m. outside Howard Brewing in downtown Lenoir. The outdoor event will feature visual art displays, craft beer tastings, food vendors, live music and children’s art activities. Artists, crafters and food vendors may apply for space at the Hues and Brews Festival. Twenty separate artist spaces and three separate food vendor spaces are available at this location. The registration deadline has been extended to Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. All applications will be available at www.CaldwellArts.com.
