1) Screening of Songcatcher Held Aug. 11

High Country Life Long Learners in association with the Watauga County Public Library invite you to join us for a movie viewing of the Songcatcher on Aug. 11 from 2-4:30 p.m. Director Maggie Greenwald’s film Songcatcher is a drama about a musicologist researching and collecting Appalachian folk music in the mountains of western North Carolina. Although the film is fictional, it is based on the work of Olive Dame Campbell, founder of the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina and that of the English folk song collector Cecil Sharp. This film has an MPAA rating of PG-13 and an approximate run time of 109 minutes. 2) Bachmeier Named Appalachian’s Human Resources Director

Mark D. Bachmeier of Wilkesboro has been named director of human resources at Appalachian State University. He will begin his duties Aug. 11. Bachmeier has 12 years of experience in human resource leadership, including serving as deputy labor commissioner/interim labor commissioner and commissioner of labor for the state of North Dakota, and director of human resources and associate vice president/executive director for human relations strategy and operations with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC). He most recently was vice president for hospitality and support services at WFUBMC. “Appalachian and its 1,200 permanent and temporary staff employees will be well served by Mark’s experience as a state labor commissioner and in employee relations, including employment law, compliance, dispute resolution, policy development and training,” said Chief of Staff Randy Edwards. Bachmeier will oversee a comprehensive human resources program that includes: staff recruitment; wage and salary administration; benefits administration; employee relations; training and development programs; personnel policies; and human resources information systems. The position of human resources director reports to the chancellor. Bachmeier has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Minot State University and a master’s degree in sociology from Indiana University.

3) Beech Mountain Resort Hosts Free Junior MTB Skills Clinic Series

Beech Mountain Resort will offer a free Junior Mountain Bike Skills Clinic series. The clinic will be held Aug. 9 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. with registration from 10-10:45 a.m. in Ski Beech Sports. Beech Mountain Resort is located at 1007 Beech Mountain Pkwy in Beech Mountain. The clinic is open for ages 6-12. Join us for the free clinic at Beech Mountain Resort. The clinic is designed to teach kids proper riding technique while maintaining a high level of fun and engagement. Admission includes a snack and possible prizes. Come ride with us! Skills covered include body positioning and balance, shifting, braking and trail application. Required gear includes a fully functional bike, a helmet and a water bottle or camelback.
