1) The Walker Center Presents: Travis Ledoyt’s “A Tribute to the King” Jan. 30

The Walker Center, on the campus of Wilkes Community College, will present Travis LeDoy’s “A Tribute to the King” on Friday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m. This performance is sponsored by Carolina West Wireless. Travis LeDoyt has been called the best young Elvis in the world, and there are four good reasons why: he looks like Elvis, he sings like Elvis, he moves like Elvis and his personality and mannerisms both on and off stage sre strikingly similar to Elvis. Travis was born in 1977, the same year Elvis died, in Greenfield, Mass. It was evident at an early age that he had the elements necessary to become an entertainer. His rascally bahavior and clever wit were responsible for providing a good deal of light-heartedness and laughter, and his talent and love of music was evident from an early age. Travis was exposed to a wide variety of musical styles, including country, swing, rock n’ roll and classical. His fascination with music led to formal piano lessons at age nine. Very soon, he was proficient at playing both piano and guitar, writing his own songs and singing. That early training and his natural talent have culminated in Travis being one of the most convincing tribute acts to ever grace the stage. Travis was not an immediate fan of Elvis Presley, but as he got to know more about the man and his music, he came to understand why Elvis was dubbed “The King of Rock n’ Roll.” He played Elvis CDs constantly and began to sing along. As travis matured, he found his voice and appearance were remarkably similar to Elvis. After his first performance in tribute to Presley, he found the public response to be overwhelming. Since that time, Travis has been leaving audiences in awe everywhere he has performed around the world. A limited number of tickets are available for this performance. For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact the Walker Center Box Office at 336-838-6260 or walker.boxoffice@wilkescc.edu<mailto:walker.boxoffice@wilkescc.edu>. The John A. Walker Community Center is dedicated to being this region’s primary venue for cultural experience and to serving as the preferred gathering place for meetings, receptions, conventions, banquets and parties for our community. The Walker Center and Wilkes Community College are 100% Tobacco Free.

2) Martin Luther King, Jr. to be Celebrated in Watauga County Jan. 18-24

Twenty-three years ago, a group of area citizens organized a silent protest of a KKK rally in Boone and Blowing Rock. This group became the “I Have a Dream Task Force” committed to recognize and honor the life and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Since that time, each year we’ve had the opportunity to celebrate the life of Dr. King and to join together in his dream. Programming by local churches and organizations has brought life to Dr. King’s message of hope and unity among diverse people in the county as a whole and on the Appalachian State University campus. Dialogues on civil rights, religious tolerance and unity; art activities for children; a lecture and visit to campus by civil rights leader Julian Bond; the MLK challenge – a day of service to the community; music; and a radio program featuring our children’s response to “what the dream means to me” are all part of this year’s events. Last year a new branch of the NAACP was established in Watauga County and has joined other campus and town and county churches and organizations in the celebration of Dr. King and his dream.
