6) Boone Area Residents Collect More Than 760,000 Shoebox Gifts

Peek through the door of the warehouse at 801 Bamboo Rd. and you’ll find it bustling with activity and looking like a huge Christmas workshop. This season, the Boone processing center of Operation Christmas Child has thousands of volunteers joyfully receiving and preparing more than 760,000 shoeboxes. Filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items, these shoebox gifts will soon be shipped around the world to children in need of hope. Boone-area residents rallied together last month to pack shoebox gifts for children in need around the world, but it’s not too late. The Boone processing center will be open until Dec. 20 to receive donations for Operation Christmas Child – the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. The Boone Processing Center is located at 801 Bamboo Rd. in Boone. For more information, call 800-353-5949. The center is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Residents who want to help but cannot make it to the center can build a shoebox through an online tool offering a personalized and convenient way to send a gift to a child on one of the hardest-to-reach countries. By visiting samaritanspurse.org, residents can select a child’s age and gender, shop through an online selection of culturally relevant gifts, “build” a shoebox and finish it off by uploading a photo and writing a note of encouragement to the child who will receive it. There are also opportunities to volunteer at processing centers around the United States through Dec. 20. For more information, visit occvolunteersignup.com. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. Through simple shoebox gifts and a message of hope through Jesus Christ, children learn they are loved and not forgotten. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered gift-filled shoeboxes to more than 113 million children in over 150 countries and territories. In 2014, Operation Christmas Child hopes to collect enough shoebox gifts to reach another 10 million children. For more information, call 1-800-353-5949 or visit www.samaritanspurse.org.
