1) Baha’i Devotional Meeting Held Dec. 14
There will be a Baha’i devotional meeting at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, in Stony Fork. The theme of the meeting will be “The Power of Prayer.” Baha’is believe in the divine origin of all the world’s great faiths. All are welcome. For more information and directions, call 268-2191.
2) Registration for Yoga Classes at Senior Centers
The next session of yoga classes is scheduled to meet from 6:15-7:15 p.m. at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center on Tuesdays beginning Jan. 6. Deadline to register is 5 p.m. on the first day of class. Classes will also be held at the Western Watauga Community Center on Thursdays starting Jan. 8 from 11 a.m.-noon. This class is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced yoga students. The instructor, Akal Dev Sharonne, has been a yoga practitioner and teacher for more than 30 years. Her classes are a delightful blend of humor, challenge and wisdom. The cost of each 12-week session is $74 per person.
3) Movie Screening at Watauga County Public Library Dec. 18
Third Thursday, the Watauga County Public Library’s movie discussion group, invites you to join them for a viewing of The Big Lebowski on Dec. 18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The Coen brothers’ 1998 film The Big Lebowski is a Raymond Chandler-esque comedy and crime caper that pivots around a case of mistaken identity complicated by extortion, double-crosses and White Russians. When Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, an unemployed slacker and avid bowler, gets mistaken for a millionaire by the same name, Dude’s rug gets destroyed and Lebowski’s wife, Bunny, gets kidnapped by a group of nihilists. Will Dude and his friends be able to save Bunny? More importantly, can Dude get a replacement rug? That rug really tied the room together. The film has an MPAA rating of R.
4) Upcoming Events at Lost Province Brewing Company Dec. 8-16
- Tuesday, Dec. 9: Cheap Date Night at Lost Province. Dinner and a movie only $25 from 6-10 p.m. Movie starts at 8 p.m. No charge to come and watch the movie. Movie feature this week is “Elf.”
- Thursday, Dec. 11: $3 Thursday. $3 pints on all Lost Province brewed beers (except high gravity). 8 p.m.-closing live music featuring Matt Walsh with optional cover. His music primarily focuses on original music and blending his roots with new ideas rather than replicating them. The result reflects many genres of music – early electric and hill country blues, rock, old country, rockabilly, soul, stoner and garage rock, hip-hop and psychedelia.
- Friday, Dec. 12: Freakin’ Firkin Friday at Five continues with the release of a special 12-gallon cask of beer at 5 p.m.: Calypso hop infused rye pale ale. 10 p.m.-closing Live Music: Dr. Bacon Band. Dr. Bacon is a genre-defining “Appalachian Funk-Grass” band from Boone. They play an infectiously danceable blend of funk, soul, jazz, rock, blues, folk, hip-hop and more with a southern bluegrass foundation and instrumentation. $3 cover and 21+ only.
- Saturday, Dec. 13: 8 p.m.-closing live music: BanDam is a local group originating in Boone.The band takes a little bit of everything into their sound, leaving no musical influence out of their playing and writing. Optional cover.
- Sunday, Dec. 14 – 1 p.m. – Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Football Game on the large screen. Lost Province Sunday: Residents of Watauga, Ashe, Avery and Alleghany counties receive 10 percent off of food with verification of residency.

5) Girl Sout Troop 10807 Christmas Festival Held Dec. 13
GS Troop 10807 will host a Christmas Festival on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 5-7:30 p.m. at Boone United Methodist Church. They will have baked potato and chili supper by donation, silent auction, fun Christmas crafts and local vendors for your last minute Christmas shopping.
6) $5 Zumba Classes Offered at Curves
Curves of Boone offers Zumba in circuit classes at the facility on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. for $5 in the month of December.
