1) Grandfather Mountain Hosts Holiday Sunset and Sunrise Events

As the holidays approach, Grandfather Mountain is taking the “season of light” theme literally. The Linville Park will offer two exclusive sunrise and sunset opportunities this winter that allow guests to witness the splendor of the day’s beginning or end from the High Country’s highest peak. On Dec. 15, watch the sunset from the Mile High Swinging Bridge, then stick around as night falls to see the Bridge Illuminated with solar-powered Christmas lights. An anonymous donor supplied the strands of bulbs this year in hopes of spreading holiday cheer and underscoring the merits of solar power. Then, on Jan. 1, 2015, witness the first light of the New Year as you breathe the brisk mountain air, adopt your resolutions or dream of the year to come. “Winter is one of the best times to sightsee and photograph at Grandfather Mountain because the air is so crisp and clear – the visibility is exceptional,” said public relations specialist Kellen Short. “It’s not uncommon this time of year to see the Charlotte skyline, 80 miles away, with the naked eye.” Both events are weather dependent and may be cancelled with short notice in case of hazardous weather conditions. Admission to either of these special after-hours events is $10 per person ($5 for Bridge Club Members) and is limited to the first 30 registrants. To register, email events@grandfather.com or call 828-733-2013 during business hours. Participants are encouraged to wear heavy winter jackets, hats and gloves, bring a flashlight and be prepared for the possibility of slick surfaces on the parking lots and walkways.
