3) Appalachian Chorale Performs Dec. 2

The Appalachian Chorale will perform works by Johann Adolf Hasse, Franz Biebl and Felix Mendelssohn at 8 p.m. Dec. 2 in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free. Dr. Linda Larson directs the chorale. Dr. Joby Bell will be the accompanist. Soloists are sopranos Elizabeth Thomas and Mary Royall Hight, mezzo-soprano Sarah Cave, tenor Joshua Allen and bass Jacob Cook. The program opens with 18th century composer Hasse’s “Laudate Coeli Dominum,” based on verses from the Psalms. Next on the program is Biebl’s “Ave Marie.” The German composer wrote the composition at the request of a fireman who wanted a piece for the department’s male choir to perform at choral competitions. Following a performance in Munich, Biedl gave the piece to the Cornell Glee Club to perform in the U.S., which led to the composition’s popularity. The chorale will perform an arrangement for mixed voices. The program concludes with Mendelssohn’s “Gloria,” written when the composer was 13. “When he wrote it, he was spending a lot of time studying Bach, which is obvious at times in the composition,” Larson said. “But there are also a number of moments that forecast Mendelssohn’s fully developed style yet to come. It’s very dense with a lot going on in a relatively short piece. The soloists’ parts are very ensemble-oriented: a duet, a trio and two movements with the full five-voice ensemble.” The soloists are graduate students in the Hayes School of Music’s vocal ensemble “Quintessential.”
