Elkland Art Center’s Trash’N Fashion Event

Watch freaky chic take a strut down the runway during Elkland Art Center’s Trash’N Fashion event.

The fashion show pairs local businesses with designers to create wearable art out of trash, headed up by fashion coordinator Kate Webb. Georgia Bowen will be the MC, representing the Hospitality House. Hospitality House, a non-profit crisis agency, serves seven counties (Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes, Yancey) in northwestern North Carolina helping those living in crisis, poverty and homelessness rebuild their lives by providing food, shelter, and supportive services. Hospitality House is a place to get a hand up, not a hand out.

Appalachian State University students and community members collect landfill-bound material from local sponsoring businesses and organizations and make stylishly outrageous outfits and costumes. Local band The Narcissists will provide music before and after the show. It’s the fifth year of the annual Trash’N Fashion Show.

Twelve models are participating this year, sponsored by the following businesses: Rivergirl Fishing Company, Ashe Custom Framing & Gallery, Blue Ridge Learning Center, Harmony Center for Women’s Health & Vitality, Appalachian Mountain Brewery, ASU Art Management Organization, Boone Healing Arts Center, CoBo, Proper, Benchmark Provisions, Haircut 101, Strand Beads/Bald Guy, and SOS Printing.

As a special bonus this year, members of the Watauga County Library Teen FANDOM Club will be making and presenting their own fashions.

The Trash’N Fashion show will be held Friday, Apr. 10, at Strand Beads/Bald Guy on King Street in downtown Boone. Doors open with music at 6:30 p.m., with runways held at 7 p.m. and 7: 45 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for students, and kids 12 and under get in free.

Elkland Art Center is a non-profit community arts organization based in Todd. It is also hosting a paper doll art collection at Strands Beads/Bald Guy through the month of April.
