The Two Rivers Community School 8th grade class will embark on a three-day canoe trip down the New River next week, Sept. 9-11. This expedition ties into the 8th grade watershed curriculum focusing on local rivers and their impact on our community. Students will learn camping and paddling skills while journaling and analyzing river ecology and hydrology.
On Thursday, Sept. 3, the 8th grade worked alongside ASU researchers to complete water quality studies along the Brookshire Park stretch of the New River’s south fork.
“Our 8th graders are learning the importance of water quality and growing a sense of responsibility by understanding and appreciating the New River’s value to our community,” says 8th grade teacher Clint Byers.
This excursion ties into the 8th grade watershed curriculum.
“Connecting our students to real world issues and matters effecting community enables them to develop a deep sense of responsibility and opinion on issues surrounding our waterways” says School Director Dr. Rizor.
