Eighth Annual Avery County EMS Toy Run Motorcycle Ride Set for Sept. 19 in Newland

By Troy Brooks

Christmas may still be a few months out, but people are already thinking about the gift of giving. On Sept. 19, Avery County will hold its eighth annual Toy Run to raise money and collect presents for less fortunate children and families.

The Toy Run will give participants a scenic motorcycle ride through Avery and Watauga counties. All motorcycles are welcome. After the ride, people are invited to stick around for free food, live music, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

“My partner, Jerry Calloway, and I have been doing this for eight years now,” said Toy Run Director Tommy Burleson. “We don’t do it for the publicity. We do it for the families. There are a lot of people who struggle around here to find gifts for their children, including single mothers and single fathers. Both kids and parents need help and that’s what we try to do.”

Participation in the Toy Run costs $15 per person or a toy valued at $15. All funds will go towards families in need of finding special toys for their children.

“It brings a tear to the eye when you watch a mother or father pick out a special gift for their child,” said Burleson. “When they pick out a gift, we wrap it up for them to take home and give to their children on Christmas. It’s truly a special time of the year for them.”

The Toy Run will depart from the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland at 11 a.m. on Sept. 19. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. that morning.

In the case of bad weather, the Toy Run will be moved to Sept. 26. Call 828-457-5298 to stay updated on changes to the schedule.
