Eclectic String Bands at the Jones House: Dashboard Hula Boys, Brushfire Stankgrass

The Town of Boone will feature an evening of eclectic string bands at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center on Friday, continuing the 2016 Summer Concerts at the Jones House series.
With the downtown Boone First Friday evening in store, the Jones House porch will help fill the front lawn and central King Street with a variety of sounds, from the Hawaiian ukulele to the fiddle-banjo combination of the southern Appalachian mountains.

Dashboard Hula Boys will start the event at 5:00 p.m., bringing their unique mix of harmony vocals, original songs, and both known and unknown gems of the past.  The Dashboard Hula Boys members, Tom Whyte, Ed Midgett, and Bob White, have been playing together under various band names for the better part of two decades.  All of the members bring diverse experience, talents, and repertoires to the mix, including Midgett on guitar, White on bass, and Whyte on ukulele, harmonica, and tenor banjo.  The trio have also spend their time honing in on tight two- and three-part harmony vocals.

“The Hula Boys are really a ton of fun,” says concerts organizer, Mark Freed.  “Their humor and good nature is infectious, and their good musicianship and singing will keep you wanting more.”
Brushfire Stankgrass will follow the Dashboard Hula Boys, starting around 5:45 p.m.  Brushfire Stankgrass is based in Asheville and bills themselves as a “bluegrass fusion” group.
“I first heard about this group because of a John Hartford tribute set they were performing,” Freed says.  “I contacted them to ask if they would bring that show to Boone, and I quickly found out about their original music and standard set as well… they are really good!”
The band has drawn the attention of both traditional bluegrass fans and jamband fans alike, as the band combines elements of traditional stringband music with more modern fusion sounds to create their unique blend.  The band has been busy, performing more than 100 dates a year, while also hosting a weekly John Hartford-theme bluegrass jam in Asheville.  The band has two acclaimed albums and is currently working on their third release.  The band includes brothers Will and Ben Saylor on guitar and banjo, Daniel Iannucci on bass, and Michah Thomas on drums.
Brushfire Stankgrass will perform at Murphy’s later Friday night.
The Summer Concerts at the Jones House are free, and patrons are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket to sit under the giant maple trees in the front lawn of the community center.  Performances take place every Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Jones House rain or shine.  The Jones House is located at 604 W.
