Love them or hate them, commercial drones are destined to become a familiar sight hovering over our cities in neighborhoods in the near future.

The FAA projects that the commercial-drone industry will inject $82 billion in economic impact to the U.S. economy and create 100,000 high-paying jobs within the first 10 years. Understanding the good, the bad and the ugly of the drone sector will help the public and government officials make sane decisions about drone regulation and consumer use. From Amazon deliveries to police surveillance to crop-soil analysis, drones are here to stay.

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, drone tech writer and speaker Jason Reagan will present a public discussion about drones at 5:30 pm at the Watauga County Public Library Community Room in Boone. The discussion will answer questions like:

  • What precisely is a commercial drone and why should I care?
  • What is the government doing about commercial drones?
  • What are the pros and cons of the growing commercial drone industry?
  • How are police, search-and-rescue teams, farmers and conservation groups using drones for the public good?
  • What’s the downside?
  • Will the growing number of drones threaten our privacy?

“I have not seen an industry emerge with such enormous potential to both radically benefit and harm our society since the rise of the Internet in the 90s,” Reagan said. The local tech writer contributes weekly to DroneLife.com and has appeared on several drone-related podcasts.

“I tend to think – as with most technology – that the drone sector will ultimately be beneficial but I want to provide a balanced view of this undeniable trend line and answer questions the public may have about drones,” he added.
