From the Desk of ACS Supt.: Enjoy The Summer, Back To School Bash Set for Aug. 13

Dear Avery County Community,

I hope you are planning a great summer and will have some time to enjoy our wonderful community. As the summer begins, the Avery County Schools are beginning to work very hard to prepare for a new school year. It is our desire to meet the needs of the diverse group of students that we serve; in order to do that, we need the help of our entire community. One major way you can support our children is through the third annual Back to School Bash. As you have witnessed, much can be accomplished when we work together. Will you join us as we help our families get off to a great school year?

The Avery County Schools, along with Linville Land Harbor and other community supporters, are sponsoring the Back to School Bash for our families. This event brings together community partners to offer FREE school supplies and information vital for a safe, successful school year. Currently, more than 61 percent of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch and 33.9 percent of our children less than 18 years of age live below the federal poverty line. These numbers indicate the imperative need to join together to assist families as they begin the 2016 school year.

The Back to School Bash will feature law enforcement, fire/safety demonstrations, required forms to complete, free/reduced lunch applications, school registration packets, information about student health and insurance, various activities, FREE haircuts, clothing, backpacks, school supplies and food! The day once again promises back-to-school assistance for families, as well as a time to celebrate the start of another new school year.

We are asking our community leaders and groups to consider making a monetary donation to assist us in buying needed school supplies to fill backpacks for our students. These tax deductible donations can be mailed directly to the Avery County Schools at 775 Cranberry Street, Newland NC, 28657. Volunteers are needed at the event to help distribute information about your organization. We also ask that you help us spread the word for our Back to School Bash, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016 in the Avery High School football stadium. Please contact me by phone or email to confirm your agency being represented at the Bash.

If I can help you in any way, please don’t hesitate to ask. I am available to speak to you or your organization about the Back to School Bash or any other issue concerning our school system.

I want to personally thank you for your leadership in our community and for your support of our students.

Sincerely yours,

David Burleson

Superintendent
