Thanks to all the recent snow disruptions, you have a few more days to shine a light on your favorite “home town hero” with a nomination for Great Friend to Families award. Nominations will now be accepted until midnight, March 9.

Presented by The Children’s Playhouse and Over Yonder, the 7th annual Great Friend to Families award recognizes sustained contributions by individuals to the well-being of young children and their families in the High Country.  Awards will be given in three categories:

  • Helping Hands (those who help families through their careers) and
  • Helping Hearts (those who help through philanthropy or volunteerism), and,
  • Young Hearts (young people up to age 17 who have already made significant efforts outside their own family to help children and families in the High Country).

Nomination forms can be filled out online at http://goo.gl/forms/dnn9e7BsYP or downloaded at The Children’s Playhouse website, goplayhouse.org or by stopping by the children’s museum at 400 Tracy Circle, Boone.

We are also pleased to announce the 2015 judges who will select the overall winners in each category: Scott Elliott, superintendent of Watauga County Schools; Kaaren Hayes, executive director of Parent to Parent and last year’s winner; and Mary Moretz, retired educator and former Watauga County Commissioner. For more information about the awards, see http://goplayhouse.org/events/Great_Friend_to_Families_award.html
