Dead of Winter II: Songs of the Grateful Dead at Canyons, Boone Saloon Feb. 19 & 20

By Jesse Wood

When the wind is whipping down King Street or Valley Boulevard and snow is still on the ground, the Grateful Dead can warm the spirit in the High Country. And what’s better than hanging out at Shakedown Street to support a good cause? Well, not much, especially in the dead of winter.

12688009_10208388688418452_5294768334649691672_nNow in its second year, The Dead of Winter takes place on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 20 in Blowing Rock and Boone. The Friday show happens at Canyons, starting at 8 p.m., while the Saturday show takes place at the Boone Saloon, beginning at 10 p.m. The Boone Saloon show is 21 and up.

Both shows have a $10 suggested cover and benefit the Watauga Humane Society and Boone A.M.E.N. Corner, a charity that supports local musicians in need.

“A lot of Dead Heads have called the High Country home, and the response to last year’s inaugural shows was nothing short of overwhelming!! We’re thrilled to be playing music we love for an appreciative audience, as well as a great cause,” musician and organizer David Brewer said. “The Watauga Humane Society’s tireless efforts are a point of pride in the High Country, and we’re happy to be servants of their cause.”

A number of musicians from a variety of bands will tag team to play the eclectic tunes of the Grateful Dead. Musicians include Brewer, Rob Brown, Brandon Holder, Toma Fuller, Slate Lacey, Jonathan Priest and more.
