The Summer Concerts at the Jones House continue Friday with performances by David Childers and Lauren & Earleine, starting at 5 p.m. from the front porch of the downtown community center.
Mount Holly resident and North Carolina native, David Childers, has been writing, recording, and performing his original songs for decades. He started at age 14, when his father gave him a banjo, and he moved to guitar when he was 18 years old. Childers formed his first band in the early 1970s, an acoustic trio called Steeltree. In 1995, he released his first album under his name, featuring all songs that he wrote.
Just last year, Childers released his sixth album, called Run Skeleton Run, with production help from the Avett Brothers’ Bob Crawford. The album has been garnering accolades from reviewers and fans across the state and beyond. The veteran songwriter has reached a strong stride and efficiency in his storytelling.
“That’s the way I approach songwriting,” Childers says. “You don’t have to say so much to tell a good story.”
Childers is also a veteran performer, who has appeared on the World Cafe, Mountain Stage, the main stage at Merlefest, and stages across Europe. This will be his first time to the Jones House in a couple years, but he has performed in the series several times before.
“We always look forward to having David to the porch to share his powerful and descriptive songs,” says concert organizer, Mark Freed.
Also appearing at Friday night’s concert will be Lauren and Earleine – a duo of two local women singers and song writers. Lauren Hayworth has performed in the Jones House series with several groups over the years, including The Djangovers, The Mercury Dames, and more. Hayworth is a multi-instrumentalist, typically performing on banjo, ukulele, or accordion, and an accomplished singer. She released an album Lullabies for Keira in 2016, featuring a host of Boone area musicians.
Earleine, aka Ashley Wright, moved to the Boone area in 2016, after growing up in a Nashville, Tennessee suburb. Her songwriting mixes poetic lyricism and dreamy harmonies with hard time memories. Earleine’s style is Americana music, swirled with folk, rock, and roots in a soulful manner. This will be Earleine’s second time performing in the Summer Concerts at the Jones House.
The weekly Friday Summer Concerts at the Jones House are free. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket to sit under the giant maple trees in the front lawn of the community center. The concert starts at 5 p.m.
Performances take place rain or shine. In extreme inclement weather, the concerts are moved inside the Jones House to the Mazie Jones Gallery, which can seat the first 40 patrons on a first-come-first-serve basis.
The 2018 Summer Concerts at the Jones House are produced by The Town of Boone’s Cultural Resources Department and sponsored by the Downtown Boone Development Association, Mast General Store, M-Prints, Burton Moomaw Acupuncture, Rosemary Horowitz and Jerry Hyman, Melanie’s Food Fantasy, Stick Boy Bread Company, and the Appalachian Antique Mall.
Friday’s concert is also sponsored by Compassionate Care and Dr. Leslie A. Smith, with offices located at 400 Shadowline Drive. Compassionate Care offers academic quality healthcare in a hometown, intimate medical office, and new patients are currently being accepted.
