DAILY TUNES: The Outdoor Music Scene Blowing Rock’s Sunday Night Concerts in the Park, this Sunday: Swing Set

By Elly Murray

Daily Tunes will be bringing you live music performances in the High Country area for every day of the week. Get out there and enjoy the cool breezes and relaxing music of summer before it’s over!

On a calm Sunday afternoon in the delightful Memorial Park in Blowing Rock, everything is so fresh and green, you almost forget bustling Main Street is right behind you. Artists are just beginning to pack up after another successful Art in the Park, as a crowd moves in for the Blowing Rock Concerts in the Park.

The adults set up on the spacious grass in front of the sturdy wooden gazebo, unfolding their chairs, and the children set up on the nearby playground, determined to remain there the entire time. But once the music starts up from under the gazebo, and the melodious sounds waft over to the playground, they start to slowly inch back towards where their families are, unable to resist the marvelous music—for too long, anyway.

These casual concerts are always at 4 p.m., which means there’s plenty of time to check out Art in the Park and all of the phenomenal little shops on Main Street before the concert.

Harrison Herbst, of the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce, says that the event is, “very relaxed, very family friendly. People walk over from Main Street or Kilwin’s with ice cream cones, sit in the park, and relax on a Sunday evening and listen to some free music.”

There are a few park benches and stone walls for people to sit on, but most people bring lawn chairs and blankets just in case those are taken.

Performing this Sunday is Swing Set, a local jazz band with a zeal for the classics. Herbst describes them, saying, “They do a lot of old jazz standards, like Frank Sinatra, that type of music. It’ll be kind of a nostalgic feeling.”

This event is rain or shine, so stop by for a free concert after Art in the Park, and be sure to bring an umbrella—or two or three.

The lineup is as follows:

July 15: Swing Set

Aug. 12: Ashley Heath

Sept. 9: Rastacoustic

Oct. 7: The Starlighters
