Daily Tunes will be bringing you live music performances in the High Country area for every day of the week. Get out there and enjoy the cool breezes and relaxing music of summer before it’s over!

On Friday nights in the small town of West Jefferson, down the little road behind South Jefferson Avenue, nicknamed BackStreet, there’s a little park where all the action of the night is.

Locals and visitors alike gather with chairs, coolers, and children in tow to spread out across the small park and listen to music from BackStreet Park’s summer concerts. There’s a little wooden pavilion where the band plays, and behind the pavilion is an interesting piece of decor—an entire train caboose.

Jane Lonon, the Executive Director of the Ashe County Arts Council, describes the atmosphere as, “definitely relaxed. Folks bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Some have picnics and eat, and just enjoy the band.”

This Friday, the Crooked Road Ramblers will be performing right in front of the caboose. They’re a tranquil sort of band that performs the traditional music of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Lonon says they have, “great fiddle music. They’re based in Whitetop, Virginia and here in Ashe County. They’re a five piece band, and they’ve been around for a long time.”

Concert admission is free and people from all walks of life are welcome. Guests are invited to bring a picnic basket to the event, as food will not be provided. However, the Boondocks Brewing Tap Room and Restaurant is located right across the street, as are a bunch of tiny shops to discover and explore.

In the event of rain, the concerts will be moved to the Ashe Arts Center, two blocks away. The concerts always begins at 5:30 p.m. each Friday, except for the Fridays when there is a Gallery Crawl, and the Christmas in July weekend.

Next Friday, the BackStreet Park will host the Cabin Creek Boys, who perform mostly “old time hillbilly music”. They are also based out of Whitetop, Virginia, but have a special place in the High Country area.

BackStreet Park is located right in the heart of West Jefferson, so this is a great opportunity to explore the surrounding shops and figure out what really makes up the town!
