The Crossnore School Opens Three New Cottages, Dedicates Young Children’s Village

The Crossnore School held its dedication for The Young Children’s Village on Friday, August 5, 2016. The dedication was held in front of the newly completed Yandle Cottage with remarks from Brett A. Loftis, Chief Executive Officer. “A campus like this is the only way sibling groups can stay together,” Loftis told the attendees. “And here we see these kids go from merely surviving to actually thriving.”

Residential cottages are the basis of the programs offered at The Crossnore School. Up to nine children live in a cottage with two cottage parents, and they operate just like many families. Although each child has their own bedroom, siblings are placed in the same cottage as often as possible, and each cottage has their own cottage dog. Children learn to care for their surroundings and to meet the responsibilities of living in a family. The children attend school at Marjorie Williams Academy, Crossnore’s charter school, and participate in after-school activities, sports, and part-time jobs for the older kids.

Yandle Cottage was the first cottage to be completed and is expected to have its first residents in the next few weeks. Florence’s Cottage and Lewis Cottage will follow quickly behind. These three cottages will become home to 27 more children, who will also enjoy playing on the adventure playground centrally located in the heart of the Young Children’s Village.

The Young Children’s Village was part of The Crossnore School’s successful Second Century capital campaign, which was completed in 2015. It was built as a result of the strategic planning process to maximize space on Crossnore’s campus to serve more children. This strategic plan has also resulted in a partnership with Winston-Salem’s The Children’s Home, where an additional 25 children are being served now, with plans to increase that number to 100 over the next year.
