Counties in High Country Offer Best Bang for Buck, SmartAsset Ranks in Top 10 in State

By Jesse Wood

In the past couple of months, Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties have garnered attention from a financial technology company as having the best “bang for their buck” in the state.

A new study from SmartAsset, which strives to provide “accurate advice on big personal financial decisions,” considered several criteria, including property tax rate, school rankings, crimes per 100,000 people and an overall value index.

Watauga County ranked seventh in the state among counties giving residents the “biggest bang for their buck.”

Watauga County was wedged in between other counties in the High Country; Ashe County was ranked sixth in the state, while Avery County placed eighth overall.

SmartAsset also tallied which counties were most likely to be approved for a mortgage and which counties boasted the lowest tax burden.

Both Avery and Watauga counties placed in the top five regarding the counties with the lowest tax burdens. Avery County was number one overall with the median property tax of $996 per year, while Watauga County placed fourth with an annual property tax of $1,047, according to SmartAsset’s study.

The study also took into account income tax, sales tax and fuel tax. However, income tax and sales tax were the same for at least all of the counties in the top 10.

Of the counties in the High Country, Watauga County was the only one to place in the top 10 in the state as counties most likely to be approved for a mortgage.

Counties were ranked based upon the ratio of mortgage applications to mortgages approved in the county.
