Concerts at the Jones House to Feature Soul Benefactor and the Native Sons Band on July 5 at 5 p.m.

June 1, 2013. Soul Benefactor and Native Sons Band play the Jones House on Friday, July 5, continuing the Town of Boone’s Concerts at the Jones House series, starting at 5 p.m. rain or shine.

“Regardless of the weather, it will be a festive evening in downtown Boone,” said Cultural Resources coordinator Mark Freed. “It is a First Friday Art Crawl night, Soul Benefactor will be playing an extra long set, and longtime rockers The Native Sons reunite for some classic rock n’ roll.”

Soul Benefactor starts the evening at 5 p.m. bringing their danceable and singable repertoire of songs from “the deep grooves of classic recordings from the 1960s and ’70s,” states their website. The group plays songs from Motown greats like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Al Green, classic rockers like the Allman Brothers, Derek & The Dominoes, and The Rolling Stones. The group brings together a host of the High Country’s rocking multi-instrumentalists, including Aaron Buleson, Chris Hice, Steve Green and David Brewer, who all sing and swap instruments throughout their sets. The band also has a horn section – “The Horns Du Jour”- that includes Jordan Craig, Beaver Robinette and Rusty Smith. This will be Soul Benefactor’s third consecutive performance at the annual Concerts at the Jones House series, and, as before, they will follow with a late-night show at the Boone Saloon.

The Native Sons follow Soul Benefactor at the Jones House, performing in the series for the first time. While new to the Concerts at the Jones House, these longtime area rockers have been performing together in various bands in the High Country in the 1960s while in high school. They eventually formed the band Evolution, playing locally and regionally in the 60s and 70s. The guys got back together a few years ago to play some of their favorite music – songs by artists like Roy Orbison, Eli Young Band, Eagles, Creedence Clearwater, Bryan Adams, Maroon Five and Bob Segar. Native Sons includes Jack Lawrence (bass), Jim Higgins (lead guitar), Barney Hodgson (guitar, organ, vocals), Gary Waters (piano, vocals) and Larry Richardson (drums, vocals). They have been having so much fun playing that they decided to make a go at making the group active again, and they are looking forward to playing at the Jones House on Friday.

In addition to the concert, the Jones House will be featuring new exhibits, including a collection of work created by students in the Art Mart Academy Studio, work by Pegge DeLaney Laine, and a historic exhibit celebrating 125 years of the Watauga Democrat and community journalism. July 2013 marks the anniversary of the first edition of the newspaper in 1888 and the exhibit will feature a display of front pages over the years, photographs and press artifacts. These exhibits will be on display at the Jones House throughout the month of July.
